Hawkins County

Book Description

Historic Hawkins County in northeast Tennessee is an area so rich and diverse in history that it is actually 10 years older than the state itself. Organized in 1786, it was named for Benjamin Hawkins, a member of the Continental Congress. Rogersville, the county seat, boasts the state's oldest courthouse. The town of Pressmen's Home served as the headquarters for the International Printing Pressmen's Union of America. During the Civil War, the Battle of Big Creek was fought on the banks of the Holston River a few miles south of Surgoinsville. Built in 1762, Long Meadow in Carters Valley is considered Tennessee's oldest wooden structure. The county's natural beauty once attracted Hollywood; in 1983, The River, starring Mel Gibson and Sissy Spacek was filmed in Laurel Run Park in Churchill. Motown legend Diana Ross has ancestral ties to Rotherwood Plantation in Allendale. Today Hawkins County retains much of the illustrious history and charm that has captivated residents and visitors for over 200 years.

Meigs Line

Book Description

Rich with ranger lore, wilderness savvy and tracking expertise, Meigs Line follows Dwight McCarter and Joe Kelley, two retired rangers, on their search for Meigs Line, a survey line that resolved for years prior survey controversies between the Cherokee and American nations in 1802. Using an antique compass, cameras, old maps and a copy of what survives of Meigs' journal, they found very clear, preserved evidence of the survey--albeit only on the mountain tops--and a story to tell about a period in history when two nations worked together to resolve a dispute over territory.

Charlotte Hawkins Brown & Palmer Memorial Institute

Book Description

"She stayed for over half a century. When the failing school was closed at the end of her first year, Brown remained to carry on. With virtually no resources save her own energy and determination, she founded Palmer Memorial Institute, a private secondary school for African Americans. In the fifty years during which she led the school, Brown built Palmer up to become one of the premier academies for African American children in the nation. Of the hundreds of African American schools operating in North Carolina around 1900, only Palmer gained national renown, outlasting virtually every other such school."--BOOK JACKET.
