A Military History of Perthshire, 1899-1902

Book Description

Excerpt from A Military History of Perthshire, 1899-1902: Edited by the Marchioness of Tullibardine, With a Roll of the Perthshire Men of the Present Day Who Have Seen Active Service Under the British Flag It should be added that space has been found in the R011 for a mention of the men of the Yeomanry and Scottish Horse, who, enlisting for active service towards the end of the South African War. Arrived in South Africa to find that peace had been concluded. As the term Perthshire man is open to different interpretations, I may here explain that, following the lines on which the book had already been begun, I have included not only natives of the county, but men who, though not born in Perthshire, have resided therein in a civilian capacity for a period of not less than five years. The definition may perhaps be regarded as too comprehensive, but in a record such as this I would rather be accused of including too many than too few. It will, however, be readily understood that so wide a category has considerably added to the difficulties of compilation.
