More Imaginative Than Ordinary Speech

Book Description

From the author of Reviews by Cat Ellington comes a gracefully adorned compilation of eccentric beauty and elegant prose flowing with milky fluidity and honey-sweet intellectuality. Presenting More Imaginative Than Ordinary Speech: The Poetry of Cat Ellington, a mystifying collection of poetic productions that glide over multiple genres and wrap themselves around a variety of topics, including racism in America, spiritual warfare, same-sex relationships, delusional disorder, social networking, societal corruption, revenge, oppression, envy, hardship, victory, and much more. Preceded by eloquent synopses to set the tone, and succeeded by razor-sharp commentaries that will slice through the main arteries of the reader’s psyche, each poem was skillfully authored by the one and only Cat Ellington in her outstanding style of effortless ingenuity, although many in the collection do not suffer the easily offended gladly. Included in this fascinating compilation are none other than “A Declaration of Independence,” “Enemy-Centered,” “iWonderment,” “The Windows Have Eyes,” “I Call the Wind Mariah Carey,” “And Now A Word From Chicago’s South Side,” “Inspired by Imitation of Life,” “The Golden Goose,” “Mother Chicago,” “This Womanhood,” “Operation imPlantation,” “The Falsifier,” “The Black Girl,” and a great deal more. Decorated with Watercolors by Ateli, More Imaginative Than Ordinary Speech: The Poetry of Cat Ellington is a deep, powerful, cutthroat, unsparing, and spirited well of truth that will leave a lasting imprint on the reader long after the final page is turned: for the effort is representative of what has come to be expected of its distinctive authorship where it pertains to the written word. Poetry by Cat Ellington. Unconventional beauty.

Encyclopedic Dictionary of Semiotics, Media, and Communication

Book Description

Semiotics, Media Studies and Communication Studies are three closely interlinked fields. Briefly stated, Semiotics, the science of signs, looks at how humans search for and construct meaning; Communication Studies is concerned with how meaning is conveyed; and Media Studies considers the ways in which messages are transmitted and received. This dictionary is designed to help students and general readers unlock the significance of the terminology and jargon commonly used in these fields. Being interdisciplinary in nature, Semiotics, Media, and Communication Studies are cluttered with notions derived from other disciplines. Hence, this dictionary also encompasses basic concepts from the fields of anthropology, archaeology, psychology, psychoanalysis, linguistics, philosophy, artificial intelligence, computer science, and biology. Collected here are the terms, concepts, personages, schools of thought, and historical movements that appear frequently in the relevant literature. The basis of each entry is a simple definition, which often includes the term's origin. Illustrations are provided where necessary, along with historical sketches of movements or schools of thought. The commentary on personages consists of brief statements about their contribution and relevance. Thus, the dictionary not only defines what a term means, but often goes into its history, applications, and broad implications. Terms are cross-referenced and their etymology is given where possible. This is a compact, practical research manual that will relieve much tension for students in semiotics and related fields. Because of its interdisciplinary approach, it will also provide a range of scholars with a handy reference to disciplines distinct from but related to their own.

A Study Guide for the Revelation of Jesus Christ

Book Description

THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST - REV. 19:1-21 A. GENERAL - 1. Chapter 19 - brings to a close the Great Tribulation period (Daniels 70th Week Dan. 9:27) and ushers in the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ. 2. Christ promised he would come again (John 14:3). 40 days after his resurrection (Acts 1:3), Christ ascended into heaven from the Mount of Olives; just East of Jerusalem (Acts 1:9). Two angels told the apostles Jesus would return in like manner (Acts 1:11). In Rev. 19:11-16, Christ returns with armies of saints and angels. 3. The prophecies of Zechariah will be fulfilled: Thus says the Lord: I am returned to Zion and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem... (Zech. 8:3); And his feet shall stand in that day upon the Mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the East... (Zech. 14:4). 4. In Chapter 19 - there are actually 2 scenes: 1 in heaven which is one of great joy and 1 on earth which is one of great judgment. B. JOY IN HEAVEN (REV. 19:1-10) 1. SONGS OF THE SAINTS - REV. 19:1-6) a. TIME SEQUENCE - (1) After this, I (John) heard - what sounded like the roar of a great multitude in heaven shouting: Hallelujah - salvation - glory power belong to our God for true and just are his judgments he has condemned the great prostitute (whore, KJV) - who corrupted the earth by her adulteries - he has avenged on her the blood of his servants! (Rev. 19:1-2). NOTE: After this refers to the destruction of the apostate religious system in Rev. 17 and the corrupt commercial system in Rev. 18. In Rev. 18:20 the call to rejoice was issued; now we have the response to that call.

Inspirational and Sermon Starter Stories

Book Description

Twenty years ago, I began printing emails that contained short and long inspirational stories, quick quotes, poems, jokes, and other items that were forwarded by many of my Christian friends. I have finally organized these emails into those categories that will be useful while conducting Sunday school classes, bible study, delivering a sermon, addressing civic groups, changing a church sign, or to someone just needing a spiritual uplift. This is a book that will give a speaker an idea for a message, or an avid reader who only has a few minutes during a busy schedule to pause for an uplifting message. It's a book where you can start and stop at any time and come back to without having to review a previous chapter to get the impact of the story. You will find new Christian ideas and messages on every page. You can even make one of these stories into a church play or lyrics to a song.

Spinoza and Spinozism

Book Description

Stuart Hampshire, one of the most eminent British philosophers of the twentieth century, will be perhaps best remembered for his work on the seventeenth-century philosopher Spinoza, all of which is gathered now in this volume. Among the great thinkers of modern times, only Spinoza created a complete system of philosophy that rivals Plato's. Few other thinkers have felt so strongly 'the desire to have a unitary view of the world and of man's place within it' - a desire that led Spinoza to make crucial contributions to every major philosophical topic: the nature of knowledge and freedom, the existence of God, ethics and politics, mind and matter, pleasure and perception. Hampshire's classic 1951 introductory book Spinoza pioneered the revival of interest in him in the English-speaking world. It remains the best introduction, and it is reprinted here in its revised edition. But what gives particular interest to this new volume is the first publication of Hampshire's last work 'Spinoza and Spinozism', an extended presentation of a Spinozist philosophical worldview. To complete the picture, Hampshire's influential 1962 essay 'Spinoza and the Idea of Freedom' is also included. Spinoza and Spinozism is thus an ideal companion to the study and interpretation of this great philosopher.
