This report represents the first national assessment of PBDEs in the U.S. coastal zone. Results suggest that they are widely distributed nationally. Several regions, including the northern Mid-Atlantic, central Gulf of Mexico, Southern California, Pacific Northwest and the Great lakes have elevated PBDE concentrations compared with other coastal regions. Furthermore, PBDE concentrations are positively correlated with human population density along the U.S. coastline. The national and regional perspectives provided herein are intended to support research, local monitoring, and to assist resource managers and policy makers tasked with making regulatory decisions about these contaminants.

Polymer matrix composites (PMCs) have been used extensively in the marine industry because of their attractive properties, including light weight, high stiffness-to-weight and strength-to-weight ratios, ease of installation on the field, high overall durability, and less susceptibility to environmental deterioration than conventional materials. However, due to their organic nature, PMCs will degrade, decompose, and yield smoke and toxic gases when subjected to fire, leading to catastrophic consequences. Therefore, the primary focus of this chapter is on the fire safety issues of PMCs and methods to improve the fire safety for marine applications. To improve these materials’ flame-retardant performance, traditional flame retardants are reviewed, including halogenated, intumescent, and intrinsic flame retardants. The flame-retardant application of nanomaterials such as nanoclay, carbon nanotubes, and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane is then introduced. Finally, the concept of hybrid flame-retardant nanocomposite coating is presented. It is concluded that a desirable flame-retardant coating system should have such necessary characteristics, including low thermal conductivity in the thickness direction to prevent heat transfer, high in-planar thermal conductivity to dissipate heat as soon as possible, high thermal stability and heat capacity, low heat absorption, and compact char structure to prevent mass loss.

The U.S. Ocean Commission Report identified the need for regional ecosystem assessments to support coastal and ocean management. These assessments must provide greater understanding of physical and biological dynamics than assessments at global and national scales can provide but transcend state and local interests. This need and timeliness is apparent for Long Island Sound, where a multi-state regional restoration program is underway for America’s most urbanized estuary. Synthesis of the Long Island Sound ecosystem is needed to integrate knowledge across disciplines and provide insight into understanding and managing pressing issues, such as non-point sources of pollution, coastal development, global climatic change, and invasive species. Currently, there is a need for a comprehensive volume that summarizes the ecological and environmental dynamics and status of Long Island Sound and its myriad ecosystems. It has been 30 years since a comprehensive summary of Long Island Sound was prepared and 50 years since the pioneering work of Gordon Riley. Major advances in estuarine science are providing new insights into these systems, and yet, the condition of many estuaries is in decline in the face of continuing coastal development.
