First published in 1944, this is a detailed survey of twenty-four distinguished periodicals published in antebellum Georgia. Flanders shows that literary activity was generally confined to middle Georgia and often concentrated on themes of religion and morality, early American life, and European adventures. An extensive bibliography and three appendices give a comprehensive list of magazines published during the time, including dates, places of publication, and names of editors and publishers. More than nine hundred footnotes further elaborate on the analysis of backgrounds, local historical events, and information on contributors.

This alphabetical reference covers the entire spectrum of the recording of sound, from Edison's experimental cylinders to contemporary high technology. The major focus is on the recorded sound industry in the US, with additional material on Canada, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. The coverage is particularly strong on the earliest periods of recorded sound history--1877-1948, the 78 rpm era and 1949-1982, the LP era. In addition to performers and their work, entries also cover important commercial organizations, individuals who made significant technical contributions, societies and associations, sound archives and libraries, magazines, catalogs, award winners, technical topics, special and foreign terms, copyright laws, and other areas of interest. In the years following Japan's long period of self-imposed isolation from the world, Japan developed a new relationship with the West, and especially with Britain, where relations grew to be particularly close. The Japanese, embarrassed by their perceived comparative backwardness, looked to the West to learn modern industrial techniques, including the design and engineering skills which underpinned them. At the same time, taking great pride in their own culture, they exhibited and sold high quality products of traditional Japanese craftsmanship in the West, stimulating a thirst for, and appreciation of, Japanese arts and crafts. This book examines the two-way bridge-building cultural exchange which took place between Japan and Britain in the years after 1859 and into the early years of the twentieth century. Topics covered include architecture, industrial design, prints, painting and photographs, together with a consideration of Japanese government policy, the Japan-Britain Exhibition of 1910, and commercial spin-offs. In addition, there are case studies of key individuals who were particularly influential in fostering British-Japanese cultural bridges in this period.
