Greek Prose Composition (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Architectural Composition

Book Description

Excerpt from Architectural Composition: An Attempt to Order and Phrase Ideas Which Hitherto Have Been Only A conviction in the mind of the author of the possibility of formulating the approved practice of architects in designing the exterior of buildings resulted in the publication in 1898 of a series of articles upon the Principles of Architectural Composition in the Architectural Record, which were afterward reprinted in book form. This was favorably received, and formed the basis of a course of lectures which has been given by the author annually for some years at Columbia University before the students of the School of Architecture. The theories involved have never been impugned, nor indeed can they well be; as they comprise only generalizations of principles which have long been recognized in their individual application. The present work developes these theories in more coherent and logical form, and, it is believed, will serve to simplify the acquisition of the subject of which it treats. In conclusion, the author expresses his thanks to those whose names follow for their kind aid in obtaining illustrations: Messrs. Babb, Cook & Willard; Mr. James B. Baker; Mr. H. W. Desmond; Mr. Wilson Eyre; Messrs. Carrere & Hastings; Mr. George A. Freeman; Messrs. Howe, Hoit & Cutler; Mr. Elliott Lynch; Mr. Benjamin W. Morris; Messrs. Bruce, Price & de Silbour; Mr. George B. Post; Mr. H. W. Poor; Messrs. Andrew J. Robinson Co.; and Mr. E. R. Smith. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Secrets of Architectural Composition

Book Description

Well arranged, logical, and aptly illustrated, this classic survey covers every aspect of the design process. It addresses architectural principles as well as their practical application, examining general questions of scale, balance, proportion, and symmetry and presenting detailed treatments of doors, windows, walls, stairways, columns, and other features. Long acknowledged as a valuable resource for students and teachers alike, this volume is unsurpassed in terms of the richness of its material and the consistency of its insights. It was written by Nathaniel Cortlandt Curtis, an influential designer and artist who served as the head of the Tulane School of Architecture. Curtis illustrated his work with nearly 250 line drawings that depict architectural elements from a splendid variety of periods and settings, from ancient Rome's temples and palaces to modern-day hotels and museums of Paris and New York.

A Discussion of Composition

Book Description

Excerpt from A Discussion of Composition: As Applied to Architecture Persons of various interests have asked me to recommend a work on Architecture as an Art. There was nothing that exactly met their require ments, and this suggested the idea of writing some thing, myself. Although some of these pages are primarily for students of architecture, I hope the general public may find matter of interest in the book. Its first concrete form was a course of lec tures I delivered at Cornell University, between the years 1897 and 1900. The present Discussion of Composition is divided into six parts. The first treats the general laws of character in art; the second, general technical laws; the last four have to do with applications, three and five being, respectively, theoretical discussions of decoration and plan, four and six containing practical suggestions in the same subjects. Figure Composition (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Figure Composition It is not difficult to see, therefore, that it is the applica tion of the principle, and not the principle itself, that is hard to deal with. And the application is difficult because the conditions so constantly vary. Experience brings little help, for do we not see that the more experienced the artist is in composition, the more jejune, tiresome, and perfunctory his creations become. Hence I cannot but think that the best rule is to avoid rule, and, taking as full a grasp as possible of the various conditions that surround composition, to squarely attack our subject and trust to our power of artistic control to put things in their places. We have to hold in our grasp the architectural laws of stability, the drama of our story, and all the glittering beauty we can conceive. I have hoped, therefore, that this book may contain all those matters which should be borne in mind by the artist when he approaches the composition of figure subjects.
