The Reminiscences of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Reminiscences of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Vol. 2 He remained with me five years before he went to Paris. But he returned again when subsequently I asked him to come back and help me for a year or less on the fountain which I was commissioned to do at the same time as the Lincoln. I was much behind in my work and, Since I needed somebody who could aid me with skill and rapidity, I could think of no one better. He modeled the boys that are in that fountain, and, though he created them under my direction, whatever charm there may be in them is entirely due to his re markable artistic ability, and whatever there is without charm can be laid at my door. He went to Europe im mediately after that, and I did not see him again until the Chicago Exposition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Avgvstvs Saint-Gavdens

Book Description

Excerpt from Avgvstvs Saint-Gavdens The chronology of the works of Saint-Gaudens is difficult, and, in some cases, impossible to fix with absolute accuracy. He was apt to have several commissions in process of execution at the same time, and in more than one instance he carried a task over a considerable period. For example, when I asked him about the Shaw monument, he replied, "1 had this many years in my studio, my interest making me do a thing beyond what the sum contracted for justified me in doing." In placing most of the statues and medallions here illustrated I have followed indications given to me by the sculptor himself. For permission to make use in this monograph of material previously contributed by me to "The North American Review," "The Outlook," and "The New York Tribune," I am indebted to the courtesy of the editors of those publications.
