With the single exception of the illustrious Washington, no other military hero of the revolution has so often been the theme of the orator, the subject of appreciative eulogy, or the star towards which a grateful posterity has been proud to point as an emblem of American courage and patriotism. In the review which we have attempted of his eminent services, both in the deliberations of the public councils and in the din of the battle-field, it has been the aim of the writer to place this admirable character before the public in a light calculated to display his merits as they should be known to his countrymen.
