Centaurs and Snake-Kings

Book Description

Griffins, centaurs and gorgons: the Greek imagination teems with wondrous, yet often monstrous, hybrids. Jeremy McInerney discusses how these composite creatures arise from the entanglement of humans and animals. Overlaying such enmeshment is the rich cultural exchange experienced by Greeks across the Mediterranean. Hybrids, the author reveals, capture the anxiety of cross-cultural encounter, where similarity and incongruity were conjoined. Hybridity likewise expresses instability of identity. The ancient sea, that most changeable ancient domain, was viewed as home to monsters like Skylla; while on land the centaur might be hypersexual yet also hypercivilized, like Cheiron. Medusa may be destructive, yet also alluring. Wherever conventional values or behaviours are challenged, there the hybrid gives that threat a face. This absorbing work unveils a mercurial world of shifting categories that offer an alternative to conventional certainties. Transforming disorder into images of wonder, Greek hybrids – McInerney suggests – finally suggest other ways of being human.

The Purification Papers

Book Description

This original 2012 review by an Amazon Top 1000 Reviewer was redacted from the Amazon Website. "Author Daniel Briggs has done a lot of work to put together this remarkable compilation of evidence that we are inevitably heading toward a major shift in consciousness. I was very impressed: he must have read hundreds of books in his research of this compilation. It includes history going back to matriarchal times, biblical times, esoterica, alien influences, the Mayans (of course), the Bible code, Terence McKenna's analysis of the I-Ching, and much, much, MUCH more! Modern events such as 9-11 and OJ Simpson are weaved into the prophecies. Though I have read a great deal on the vast majority of these topics, I was nonetheless surprised and shocked by tidbits of info, such as the concept that men actually leave energy lines in women during sex, and these take 7 years to go away. Astronaut Edgar Mitchell went into Samadhi during his space flight. I was most astonished to learn that even hard-headed engineering types have concluded that this shift is inevitable as we head toward zero point energy. There is hope on the horizon! I love how Mr. Briggs suggests we will develop siddhis (powers) after the shift: 'Attendance at the Hogwarts schools of the new Golden Age promises inconceivable thrills as we develop our God-given siddhis in a natural and controlled environment. Without doubt, the most popular class will be flying. Sporadic levitations have been recorded throughout history, mostly connected with an overpowering euphoric vision: rapture.' My only complaint about this book is that there is no introduction for us to get the overall picture of what the book is about, nor is there an author bio. But if you want a summary of all things pointing to a major shift, this is a great read!" Susan Schenck, Amazon Top 1000 Reviewers

Encyclopedia of Ancient Deities

Book Description

Throughout history, humans have pondered the question of their existence. In nearly every society, part of the answer has included some form of god or goddess. For the Mayans, one such deity was Ajtzak, who tried to create humans from wood; for the Yorubas of Africa, Shango controlled the thunder and lightning. The Chinese of the Shang dynasty era worshipped Shang Ti. Evil deities were also part of the answer, as in the case of the Kuvera, the Hindu chief of evil in the Vedic period, and Tu, the Persian or Islamic demon of fatal accidents. All of the known ancient gods, many heretofore obscure or known only from mythological literature, are included in this exhaustive reference work. The focus is on their origins, histories, and functions. The people who believed in each deity are identified, along with alternate names or spellings both old and modern. The descriptions that follow are of the functions, origins and physical nature of the deities. Extensive cross references are provided for alternate spellings and names.
