Organic Materials in Civil Engineering

Book Description

This book provides an inventory of organic materials and products, the major components of all civil engineering projects, in terms of their scientific and technical background, including the regulations that cover their use and their predicted useful life. Such materials include: bitumen on the roads; geotextiles for retaining walls; membranes for bridges; tunnel and reservoir waterproofing; paint binders to protect metallic and concrete structures or to create road markings; injection resins; gluing products; concrete admixtures; and composite materials. The presentation is based on a physicochemical approach, which is essential if these products are to be considered as part of sustainable development: as such, those studying or working in these fields will find this an invaluable source of information.

Colloid Chemistry II

Book Description

Over the past forty years,good-old fashioned colloid chemistry has undergone something of a revolution, transforming itself from little more than a collection of qualitative observations of the macroscopic behavior of some complex systems into a discipline with a solid theoretical foundation and a whole to- boxofnew chemical techniques. It can now boast a set of concepts which go a long way towards providing an understanding of the many strange and interesting behavior patterns exhibited by natural and artificial systems on the mesoscale. This second volume of“Topics in Current Chemistry”on Colloid Chemistry, focuses on supramolecular approaches and new approaches towards polymer colloids, also with strong emphasis on biological and biomedical applications. Again topics were chosen which are expected to have broader relevance and to be interesting to a more general readership. The volume opens with a contribution by C.M.Paleos in which new amp- philes are presented which not only self-assemble to micelles or vesicles but also possess the ability to show specific recognition of complementary H-bridge p- terns.Such structures might point a way to a rational addressing of surfaces and supramolecular structures by purely chemical means.

Functionalized Polysulfones

Book Description

Functionalized Polysulfones: Synthesis, Characterization, and Applications focuses on polysulfones and their derivatives, which are widely used as functional materials in the biochemical, industrial, and medical fields due to their structural and physical characteristics, such as good optical properties, high thermal and chemical stability, mechani

Modern Methods of Polymer Characterization

Book Description

Presents the methods used for characterization of polymers. In addition to theory and basic principles, the instrumentation and apparatus necessary for methods used to study the kinetic and thermodynamic interactions of a polymer with its environment are covered in detail. Some of the methods examined include polymer separations and characterization by size exclusion and high performance chromatography, inverse gas chromatography, osmometry, viscometry, ultracentrifugation, light scattering and spectroscopy.

Plastics

Book Description

Presented here in detail is a number of generally accepted, standardised inflammability tests. A comprehensive survey of ISO, IEC, ASTN, VL, BS and DIN is given and other standards are also mentioned. The testing of materials, products and full-scale model-testing are described. Furthermore, the book describes methods for reducing the inflammability of plastics, various techniques for fires involving plastics and fire regulations.

Intelligent Text and Image Handling

Book Description

The storage, retrieval and dissemination of the non-structured information found in text, image and sound is the subject of this proceedings. This field is developing rapidly - as the entire information technology industry is a convergence of computing, telecommunications and multimedia techniques. Conditions are continually improving, enabling the needs of users for extensive and convivial access to information to be satisfied. The contributions to this volume encompass, on one hand, recent scientific research, and on the other, demonstrations of prototypes resulting from recent research, as well as the most innovative new products appearing on the market.

Polyelectrolytes

Book Description

This book contains a number of articles inspired by the NATO Advanced Study Institute on 'Charged and Reactive Polymers l' held in France in June 1972. This general title indicates simply the intention of a series. The meeting dealt mainly with the fundamental problems of the physical chemistry of polyelectrolytes in solution. Some of the articles reproduce the lectures exactly as they were delivered. Some others have been modified to a greater or lesser extent, and this as a result of improvements or new inspiration arising from comments and discussions. In previous larger conferences on macromolecules, polyelectrolytes constituted only a marginal problem and few were the individual communications or short was the time al10tted to this subject. In other meetings of a biophysical character the uses of the techniques of charged macromolecules have been exposed with less attention given to the theories or to the creation or interpretation of these techniques. AU of us felt that the time had come to enumerate and to evaluate this increasing science of polyelectrolytes which has become of major interest. During the whole period of the Institute physical chemists discussed their mutual problems for more than a week, and of ten far into the night! One of the advantages of such an Institute is to enable the Directors and the mem bers of the Scientific Committee to establish a logical order in the lectures; this order has been respected in the present edition.
