"Viral haemorrhagic fever (VHF) is a general term for a severe illness, sometimes associated with bleeding, that may be caused by a number of viruses. The term is usually applied to disease caused by: 1. Arenaviridae (Lassa, Lujo, Junin,Guanarito,Sabia and Machupo); 2. Bunyaviridae (Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever - CCHF); 3. Filoviridae (Ebola and Marburg); 4. Flaviviridae (Omsk haemorrhagic fever, Kyasanur forest disease and Alkurma haemorhagic fever). This Guide is focused on specific VHFs--Ebola, Marburg, CCHF, Lassa fever [and Lujo]--that occur in Africa and have risk of person to person transmission. This Guide does not address the management of other viral infections, such as dengue, Rift Valley Fever and yellow fever, that also have haemorrhagic manifestations, but do not have direct person-to-person transmission. Purpose: The purpose of this pocketbook is to provide clear guidance on current best management practices for VHF across health-care facilities."--Page 1.

In recent years, we have begun to recognise the rising threat of Multidrug Resistant Organisms (MDORs), and the profound impact that healthcare associated infections (HCAIs), such as MRSA, can have on both patient safety and quality of care. HCAIs prolong patients' hospital stays, and increase morbidity as well as mortality rates, yet diagnosing and treating these infections is a costly process that can place intense pressure on already limited healthcare resources. The updated and significantly expanded new edition of Manual of Infection Prevention and Control is a practical handbook that provides a comprehensive overview of HCAI control and prevention in all healthcare facilities. Clear diagrams and quick-access tables give step-by-step instructions to guide the reader through real-life prevention strategies such as hand wash, disinfection, and sterilisation. A truly current and global source, this book also includes information regarding infection outbreak management, and detailed sections on specific pathogens such as swine flu, C Difficile, ESBL, MRSA, E.coli 0157, XDR-TB, and Ebola. Manual of Infection Prevention and Control is a fully illustrated, evidence based guide for doctors, nurses, and public health physicians working to prevent the spreading of infectious diseases - most particularly HCAIs. It is also a valuable reference for environmental health officers, health educators, practice managers in GP surgeries, and health service managers.

Infectious diseases with epidemic potential remain a significant and constant threat to the health and security of populations around the world, requiring robust health emergency preparedness, readiness and response systems and capacities at local and national levels. Emergency Medical Teams (EMTs), the EMT Initiative and its global network focus on establishing common quality standards and recommendations for medical teams to respond to health emergencies rapidly and effectively, as well as strengthening and supporting national capacities through strong collaboration and coordination. This publication defines minimum standards for the establishment of such critical capacities in a predictable and quality assured manner, and will enhance the interoperability between national, regional, and international capacities. This will contribute to the development and classification of respective specialized care teams (SCT) within the EMT framework and will provide guidance to member states, ministries of health, national and international EMTs and other key stakeholders to develop capacities and trainings, preparing for, or responding to outbreaks of highly infectious diseases.

This manual addresses the design and construction of healthcare facilities supporting the response to Ebola and Marburg (E&M) disease outbreaks, particularly in treatment centres (TCs). It provides technical guidance, minimum requirements, practical tools and layout examples, and references for planning, designing, building, and operating healthcare facilities (TCs and others) to respond to E&M disease outbreaks in low– and middle-income contexts and resource-limited settings. The manual complements other World Health Organization (WHO) literature and contributes to the standardization of facility design and operation for safe and humane care and treatment of patients.
