Book Description

The research described in the proposal has continued on-track, and on-schedule. To date three major studies have been completed, and are in various phases of write-up and submission for publication. The studies are: (1) Validation of a theoretical taxonomy of perceptual speed abilities; (2) A study of part-task training and aptitude-treatment interactions in transfer of training; and (3) A study of the ability and self-regulatory aptitude components of asymptotic skills. In addition (in collaboration with Dr. Dan Woltz), completion work is taking place on the ability and volitional components of knowledge acquisition in an associative memory/substitution task. No significant impediments to the progress of the project have been encountered.

Research conducted in this project covered four related topics. (1) A theoretical and empirical examination of the taxonomic structure of perceptual speed abilities, both in general, and in the context of predictive validity for task performance. (2) Extension of previous work by Ackerman and Kanfer on the determinants of individual differences in skill acquisition by examining performance after extended practice, and by examining performance after a non-practice retention period. (3) Integration of ability and non-ability predictors of individual differences in skill acquisition. (4) Using theory and empirical data obtained in previous Air Force sponsored research and the current program, interactions between aptitudes and instructional treatments were examined.




Instructional Guidance


Book Description

The book explores a cognitive load perspective on instructional guidance. Cognitive load theory is focused on instructional design implications and prescriptions that flow from human cognitive architecture, and it has become one of the leading theories of instructional design. According to this theoretical perspective, the purpose of instructional guidance is to reduce learner potential cognitive overload by providing appropriate information in the right time and in a suitable format. As the learner’s level of prior knowledge is considered as the main factor influencing this decision, the effect of learner prior knowledge on effectiveness of instructional methods (the expertise reversal effect in cognitive load theory) provides the basic framework for the book. The fully-guided direct instruction and minimally-guided inquiry (discovery or exploratory) learning are often discussed in instructional psychology literature as examples of approaches with opposed degrees of guidance provided to the learners. This book considers the whole range of the levels of guidance (including intermediate levels) and approaches the problem of balancing learner guidance from a cognitive load perspective. The significance of this approach is in applying our current knowledge of human cognitive architecture to develop an integrated instructional approach bringing together the best features and advantages of direct instruction and inquiry learning. Both direct instruction and inquiry learning approaches have been around for long time, and their proponents can produce evidence of their effectiveness. This evidence needs to be treated within the context of appropriate learning goals in specific instructional settings for specific types of learners. This book provides an unbiased theoretical framework for managing learner instructional guidance and working principles for selecting appropriate levels and methods of instructional guidance (e.g., sequences of exploratory problems and explicit instruction; forms and levels of embedded guidance; and adapting methodologies) optimal for learners at different levels of prior knowledge.

In this book, we primarily focus on studies that provide objective, unobtrusive, and innovative measures (e.g., indirect measures, content analysis, or analysis of trace data) of SEL skills (e.g., collaboration, creativity, persistence), relying primarily on learning analytics methods and approaches that would potentially allow for expanding the assessment of SEL skills and competencies at scale. What makes the position of learning analytics pivotal in this endeavor to redefine measurement of SEL skills are constant changes and advancements in learning environments and the quality and quantity of data collected about learners and the process of learning. Contemporary learning environments that utilize virtual and augmented reality to enhance learning opportunities accommodate for designing tasks and activities that allow learners to elicit behaviors (either in face-to-face or online context) not being captured in traditional educational settings. Novel insights provided in the book span across diverse types of learning contexts and learner populations. Specifically, the book addresses relevant and emerging theories and frameworks (in various disciplines such as education, psychology, or workforce) that inform assessments of SEL skills and competencies. This volume examines the assessment of higher order thinking skills from the perspectives of applied cognitive psychology and measurement theory.
