Corrosion and Corrosion Protection of Prestressed Ground Anchorages

Book Description

This state of the art report summarizes the mechanisms and types of corrosion to which a ground anchorage based on a prestressing tendon can be subjected. The chemical, electrochemical and bacterial reactions between agressive soils and steel and concrete are dealt with in detail. There is a carefully recorded and analysed list of a number of known cases of tendon corrosion. A corrosion protection philosophy is proposed, with five classes of protection, with examples of such protection in current practice.

Factory Applied Corrosion Protection of Prestressing Steel

Book Description

Without doubt, active corrosion protection of prestressing steels by cement grout can be one of the most economic and durable solutions, if properly executed. Numerous other corrosion protection systems which fulfill requirements such as controllability and exchangeability are available. This state-of-the-art report, prepared by a task group and approved by fib Commission 9 Reinforcing and prestressing materials and systems, concentrates exclusively on factory applied corrosion protection that can be produced in controlled processes which should assure a better quality than corrosion protection applied on site. The report is addressed to designers and installers (executing persons) attempting to inform them about the various possibilities for industrially applied corrosion protection and to provide the necessary knowledge for their application.

Ground Anchors and Anchored Structures

Book Description

Treating anchorages as a direct application of the laws of statics and the theories governing the transfer of load, this book focuses on designs that are safe and reasonably priced. It is divided into two parts. Following a general introduction in the first chapter, Part One goes on to explore anchor systems, components, installation and construction details. Presents special anchor systems such as extractable, compression-type, multibell, and regroutable anchors. Analyzes the transfer of load and its relation to failure modes and anchor load capacity; deals with design considerations; covers mechanisms and types of corrosion; and details anchor stressing, testing programs, and evaluation standards. Part Two considers uses and applications and design aspects of anchored structures; presents design examples of practical value and reasonable simplicity; and incorporates examples and case histories.

Aramid and Carbon Fibre-reinforced Plastic Prestressed Ground Anchors and Their Field Applications

Book Description

With high corrosion resistance, high tensile strength, electromagnetic neutrality, and lightweight, the newly emerged aramid and carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) tendons are being used for prestressed ground anchors. FRP ground anchors can be used when the corrosion protection of steel tendons becomes expensive or difficult to achieve, or where electromagnetic insulation is required. Although FRP tendons are more expensive than steel tendons, the total cost on transportation, handling, fabrication, drilling, installation, and maintenance can be significantly reduced due to lightweight and no requirement for corrosion protection. In addition, optical fibre sensors can be integrated into FRP tendons for permanent monitoring of ground anchors. This paper gives an introduction of the currently available aramid and carbon FRP tendons and an overview of the important properties of FRP tendons and their constituent materials. The design, fabrication, installation, and field applications of aramid and carbon FRP ground anchors are described.
