At Death's Door

Book Description

At Death’s Door: End of Life Stories from the Bedside tells the powerful story of Sebastian Sepulveda’s experiences in working with patients at the end of their lives. In some cases, death came quickly, after the patient was first diagnosed with a terminal condition and entered the hospital. In other cases, patients had a long, progressive illness that got increasingly worse over the months or years until they were in their final days. In some cases, patients were able to fight off death for many years. Hard decisions are often made—whether to resuscitate or not, whether to choose hospice or not, who makes the decisions when a patient cannot, and whose decision to follow when several family members are involved in decision making. Written from the perspective of a medical doctor from years of experience, this personal approach to the end of life explores the many options available to patients and their families and reveals how real people have come to those decisions, and how they play out. With insight and sensitivity, Sepulveda offers families an important window into how life can end with compassion, care, control, and dignity. At Death’s Door features over fifty stories drawn from Sepulveda’s experience as a doctor dealing with these patients and families. As states debate the legality of assisted suicide and other end of life rights, real people make real decisions every day regarding end of life. Their stories come to life in these pages, and readers with similar concerns will find relief, comfort, and company as they face these decisions themselves.

Death's Door

Book Description

“A Grade A thriller . . . twisted, near-omnipotent villains, brutal violence, sharp plot twists, solid (and enthralling) historical research.” —The Vancouver Sun Canadian Mountie Robert DeClercq and his Special X team are facing down a stolen mummy with a trail of corpses in its wake. The question is: Is this the work of one killer? Or is it some sort of diabolical conspiracy? DeClercq’s investigation leads him to a local porn king who specializes in snuff videos and a fresh trail of mutilated female bodies being dumped around the Gulf Islands. But just when DeClercq narrows in on the criminality behind these abominable murders, an old enemy returns. Not only is Mephisto determined to destroy DeClercq once and for all, but this megalomaniac won’t stop until he puts all of humanity at the brink of Death’s Door. . . . “There are psycho thrillers and there are psycho thrillers, and the ones to watch are those by Michael Slade. This high-powered mystery stars a psycho so heinous that you might want to take a deep breath before starting this baffling case. [Death’s Door is] a story to be read with caution.” —Ottawa Citizen “There isn’t a precedent for the barbaric brilliance of a Slade novel. With its well-researched, candid ventures into the most deranged of sick psyches, Death’s Door is a witches’ brew of intense intellectualism, police procedure, and white-knuckle, wince-inducing gore.” —Rue Morgue “Slade has finely honed his skills . . . You’ll be up all night reading it and, before you finally sleep, you’ll check under the bed.” —The Vancouver Sun/DESC

Closing Death's Door

Book Description

After heart disease and cancer, the third leading cause of death in the United States is iatrogenic injury (avoidable injury or infection caused by a healer). Research suggests that avoidable errors claim several hundred thousand lives every year. The principal economic counterforce to such errors, malpractice litigation, has never been a particularly effective deterrent for a host of reasons, with fewer than 3% of negligently injured patients (or their families) receiving any compensation from a doctor or hospital's insurer. Closing Death's Door brings the psychology of decision making together with the law to explore ways to improve patient safety and reduce iatrogenic injury, when neither the healthcare industry itself nor the legal system has made a substantial dent in the problem. Beginning with an unflinching introduction to the problem of patient safety, the authors go on to define iatrogenic injury and its scope, shedding light on the culture and structure of a healthcare industry that has failed to effectively address the problem-and indeed that has influenced legislation to weaken existing legal protections and impede the adoption of potentially promising reforms. Examining the weak points in existing systems with an eye to using law to more effectively bring about improvement, the authors conclude by offering a set of ideas intended to start a conversation that will lead to new legal policies that lower the risk of harm to patients. Closing Death's Door is brought to vivid life by the stories of individuals and groups that have played leading roles in the nation's struggle with iatrogenic injury, and is essential reading for medical and legal professionals, as well as lawmakers and laypeople with an interest in healthcare policy.
