Decomposition of Alloys: The Early Stages contains the proceedings of the 2nd Acta-Scripta Metallurgica Conference held in Sonnenberg, Germany, on September 19-23, 1983. This is the fourth edition of a work which first appeared in 1965. The first edition had approximately one thousand pages in a single volume. This latest volume has almost three thousand pages in 3 volumes which is a fair measure of the pace at which the discipline of physical metallurgy has grown in the intervening 30 years.Almost all the topics previously treated are still in evidence in this version which is approximately 50% bigger than the previous edition. All the chapters have been either totally rewritten by new authors or thoroughly revised and expanded, either by the third-edition authors alone or jointly with new co-authors. Fluctuations, Instabilities, and Phase Transitions

This book contains the papers presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute held at Geilo, Norway, 11th - 20th April 1975. The institute was the third in a row devoted to phase transitions. The previous two dealt with 2nd- and 1st-order transitions in equilibrium systems and the proceedings have been published.i~ In order to make an overlap wi th those institutes, the first part of this institute was devoted to 1st -or der transitions with an emphasis on the problems of metast abi l i t y and instability en countered i n spinodal decomposition, nucleation etc. The main topic was, however, that of non-equilibrium systems, and the present institute was to our knowledge the first one devoted to the physics of such systems. The discovery of the analogy between phase transitions in equilibrium systems and instabilities in non-equilibrium systems was first made by Rolf Landauer in 1961 and later independently by others. The analogy was first pointed out for electronic devices (tunnel diodes, Gunn oscillators, lasers, etc. ) and the treatment of hydrodynamic instabilities followed later.

Electron Microscopy in Mineralogy

During the last five years transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has added numerous important new data to mineralogy and has considerably changed its outlook. This is partly due to the fact that metallurgists and crystal physicists having solved most of the structural and crystallographic problems in metals have begun to show a widening interest in the much more complicated structures of minerals, and partly to recent progress in experimental techniques, mainly the availability of ion-thinning devices. While electron microscopists have become increasingly interested in minerals (judging from special symposia at recent meetings such as Fifth European Congress on Electron microscopy, Man chester 1972; Eight International Congress on Electron Microscopy, Canberra 1974) mineralogists have realized advantages of the new technique and applied it with increasing frequency. In an effort to coordinate the growing quantity of research, electron microscopy sessions have been included in meetings of mineralogists (e. g. Geological Society of America, Minneapolis, 1972, American Crystallographic Association, Berkeley, 1974). The tremendous response for the TEM symposium which H. -R. Wenk and G. Thomas organized at the Berkeley Conference of the American Crystallographic Association formed the basis for this book. It appeared useful at this stage to summarize the achievements of electron microscopy, scattered in many different journals in several different fields and present them to mineralogists. A group of participants as the Berkeley symposium formed an Editorial Committee and outlined the content of this book.

Atomic Transport and Defects in Metals by Neutron Scattering


Book Description

The Institut Max-von-Laue-Paul Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble regularly organ ises workshops that deal with the various applications of neutrons in physics, chemistry, biology and also in nuclear physics. The workshop" Atomic Trans port and Defects in Metals by Neutron Scattering", jointly organised by the Institut Laue-Langevin and the Institut fiir Festkorperforschung of the KFA Jiilich, was held in October 1985 in Jiilich. The study of problems in metal physics and in physical metallurgy is a traditional field of neutron scattering. The most commonly used methods are diffuse elastic, small-angle and inelastic scattering of neutrons. A number of problems can be identified where neutrons yield information that is supple mentary to that from other methods such as x-ray diffraction, synchrotron radiation or electron microscopy. In certain fields, for example spectroscopy for the investigation of atomic motions or for the investigation of magnetic properties, neutron scattering is a unique method. The facilities at the High Flux Reactor of the ILL, and also at the Jiilich and at other medium flux research reactors, have contributed numerous re sults in these fields. It was the aim of this workshop to give a survey of the present state of neutron scattering in metal physics.
