This document is intended to solicit views of Canadians on the regulation of genetically modified (GM) foods as part of a process of developing advice for government on this topic. After introductory sections on GM food, the Canadian regulatory system, and the ethical context, the document describes ten key issues and poses specific questions on the following: transparency in the regulatory process; separation & independence of regulatory functions; ensuring safety during research & development activities; opportunities for public involvement; post-market monitoring for risks & benefits; capability & capacity in the regulatory system; information provision to support informed choice; labelling; environmental stewardship; and broader social & ethical considerations.
