The New York Public School, Being a History of Free Education, in the City of New York (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The New York Public School, Being a History of Free Education, in the City of New York The celebration of the centenary of the inauguration (on February 19, 1805) of the movement for free public schools in this city was suggested to the Board of Education in the spring of 1904, and, later, the preparation of a history of public education in New York. The Board unanimously approved both suggestions, and granted me a leave of absence for the purpose of writing this book. Although the time has been, of necessity, limited, no reasonable pains have been spared to secure accuracy. From the literary point of view this work makes no claim upon the reader. It is put forth as a fairly complete chronicle - a chronicle rather than a philosophic his tory of educational events in the city during the past one hundred years. To fill out the record, a preliminary chapter, relating to schools on Manhattan Island prior to 1805, precedes the his tory of the century now closing; and accounts of early schools in other parts of the city are also given. Public School Education (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Public School Education American fellow-citizens - America is my home! I have no other country. After my God and my religion, my country is the dearest object of my life! I love my country as dearly as any one else can. It is this love that makes my heart bleed when I call to mind the actual state of society in our country, and the principles that prevail everywhere. It is indeed but too true that we live in a most anti-Christian age; principles are disregarded, and iniquity is held in veneration. We see nothing but confusion in religion, in government, in the family circle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Public-School System of the United States (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Public-School System of the United States The material contained in this volume will consist of the most important of the data that I collected during a journey extending over a period of more than five months, made under the auspices of "The Forum," for the purpose of studying the public-school system of the United States. The facts presented in the first part of the present work do not vary materially from those presented in a series of articles recently published in that magazine. The matter contained in the second part, however, - the part devoted exclusively to the compositions written by the children and the drawings made by them, - appears here for the first time. In undertaking this journey it was my aim not only to learn what methods of instruction were commonly followed in our country, and the general condition of our schools, but also to investigate the manner in which the schools of different cities were managed. The following outline indicates chronologically the successive steps in the development of the system. Reorganization of the Public School System (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Reorganization of the Public School System A little more than two decades ago Charles W. Eliot, convinced that the age at which the college graduate completes his course and begins supporting himself was too high, put the question, Can school programs be shortened and enriched? This query precipitated a discussion which, while ranging over the entire field of educational theory and practice, centered particularly upon the purpose and place of the common school, the high school, and the institutions of higher learning. This critical examination of the principal parts of the system has set in clearer light their characteristics and has led to the belief that a proper regard for the distinctive functions of each makes imperative a reorganization, or at least a readjustment, of the chief divisions of the system with respect to articulation, to internal organization, to grade span, and to defined purpose.
