Book Description

This book examines representations of home in literary and visual cultures in the 20th and 21st centuries. The collection brings together scholars working on literature, film, and photography with the aim of showcasing new research in a burgeoning field focusing on representations of domesticity. The chapters span a diverse range of contexts from across the world and use a variety of approaches to exploring representations of home including studies of space, material culture, sexuality, gender, multiculturalism, diaspora, memory and archival practice. They include explorations of the Finnish Suburban home on film, home and the diasporic imagination in Chinese Canadian women’s writing and the archiving practices and photographs used to document the homes of two gay writers from Australia and New Zealand. By bringing together this range of approaches and subjects, the book explores domestic imaginaries as part of a multi-faceted, mutable and amorphous conception of home in a modern, world context. This collection therefore seeks to further studies of home by investigating how the page, screen and photograph have constructed domestic imaginaries – experiencing, critiquing, reconfiguring and archiving home – in a global age.

"Smart homes are domestic spaces outfitted with networked technology made by brands like Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Apple. However, Silicon Valley purveyors are not the only important actors in smart home development. Appliance makers, logistics companies, health and wellness conglomerates, insurance companies, and security franchises are all betting on the smart home in an economy that puts a premium on data. Together, major players in the smart home space have successfully attracted the attention and pocketbooks of millions of households by touting the virtues of ambient, networked technologies as an upgrade to modern domestic life. If industry predictions hold, nearly half of American houses will be "smart" by 2024. Yet, what it means to be "smart" is still unsettled. Threshold asks and answers the question: How do smart homes communicate cultural values about the role of technology in the 21st century? Answering this question is time-sensitive, as the coming years will determine how smart homes are configured, who has access to them, and what they mean to their owners, policy makers, technology companies, and others invested in these domestic digital platforms. The consequences of these decisions are significant because they impact both smart home residents and society at large. At present, much of the research on smart homes caters either to industry experts or scientists and engineers. This literature often describes or evaluates the technical capacities of the smart home or focuses on user interface and design. Instead, Heather Woods argues, we need a sustained cultural analysis of smart homes that considers the socio-technical variables-gender, class, income disparity, race, criminal justice, the housing market, and the future of both labor and domesticity-that give the smart home meaning. Threshold takes up this challenge from a rhetorical perspective, arguing that smart homes are lived, material embodiments of the digital cultures in which they are imagined, built, and used. Those considerations, more often than not, are relegated to secondary considerations, when in truth they are the most pervasive and consequential factors affecting anyone participating in a smart home ecosystem. Woods argues that smart homes are spatial manifestations of a phenomenon called living in digitality, a cultural condition whereby users engage with technology at every moment of every day. Using extensive fieldwork at smart homes throughout the USA, Woods traces how smart homes urge ubiquitous computing as a normalized, daily practice, readying domestic spaces and their occupants for an increasingly transactional digital future that is largely controlled by corporate interests. Media technologies have played a central role in shaping ideas about home life over the last two centuries. Changing Media, Homes and Households explores the complex relationship between home, householders, families and media technologies by charting the evolution of the media-rich home, from the early twentieth century to the present. Moving beyond a narrow focus on media texts, production and audiences, Deborah Chambers investigates the physical presence of media objects in the home and their symbolic importance for home life. The book identifies the role of home-based media in altering relationships between home, leisure, work and the outside world in the context of entertainment, communication and work. It assesses whether domestic media are transforming or reinforcing traditional identities and relations of gender, generation, class and migrancy. Mediatisation theory is employed to assess the domestication of media and media saturation of home life in the context of wider global changes. Home articulates a ‘critical geography of home’ in which home is understood as an emotive place and spatial imaginary that encompasses lived experiences of everyday, domestic life alongside a wider, and often contested, sense of being and belonging in the world. Engaging with the burgeoning cross-disciplinary interest in home since the first edition was published, this significantly revised and updated second edition contains new research boxes, illustrations, and contemporary examples throughout. It also adds a new chapter on ‘Home and the City’ that extends the scalar understanding of home to the urban. The book develops the conceptual and methodological underpinnings of a critical geography of home, drawing on key feminist, postcolonial, and housing thinkers as well as contemporary methodological currents in non-representational thinking and performance. The book’s chapters consider the making and unmaking of home across the domestic scale – house-as-home; the urban – city-as-home; national – nation-as-home; and homemaking in relation to transnational migration and diaspora. Each chapter includes illustrative examples from diverse geographical contexts and historical time periods. Chapters also address some of the key cross-cutting dimensions of home across these scales, including digital connectivity, art and performance, more-than-human constructions of home, and violence and dispossession. This book uses a multidisciplinary approach to examine the relationship between the quality of domestic life and the home environment, in its material and relational dimension, with individual and social happiness, in the context of current changes.
