An early morning assassination by an unknown sniper has a solitary witness, Beatrice. But she’s in shock and can’t identify the shadowy driver speeding away from the scene. Almost immediately, the small town homicide team springs into action led by Chris, a black detective. The murder rekindles a previous case—the mysterious death of an abused woman, Sarah Crosby. Sarah’s parents emerge as suspects, the mother willing to do anything to keep a past concealed and a father well trained in the art of shooting. Tom Ellis, an avid duck hunter also comes under suspicion as well as two young farm workers. Entering the picture is a devious reporter, risking her reputation to break the story. Set against a backdrop of marshes, orchards, and small rural towns in California’s San Joaquin Valley amid drought conditions, the struggle for survival exposes unrefined passions and a cast of characters evading an inevitable conflict, all acting as decoys to the two murders. Includes Readers Guide.

In this follow up to his best-selling book Don't Shoot the Decoys, author Doug Larsen offers more humorous observations on the sport of waterfowling. The book begins with a hilarious "Open Letter to the Duck Gods," in which Larsen wonders aloud about what he has done to deserve the wrath of the duck hunting deities, which have obviously conspired against him to ruin his hunting season, his physical and mental health, and his family life. "Three weeks into the season," he writes, "with only two weeks left to go. Everything seems to be going against me, and I wouldn't know a limit of ducks if I tripped over one." From there Larsen lets his duck hunting fancy take flights that are sure to tickle the funny bones of waterfowlers everywhere. These include ruminations on why there aren't any duck hunting movies (in the story "Black Duck Down"), a duck hunt with two sharp-shooting and keen-witted little old ladies in the Louisiana bayou (in "A Duck for Gumbo"), a chapter devoted to, of all things, "Coot Tactics," and seventeen other new and original stories of "waterfowling obsession." Indeed, what was said when Larsen published his first book is even more apt with the publication of his second: "If Gordon MacQuarrie is the voice of the old duck hunters, then Doug Larsen is the voice of the new."

My relationship with Ed Stilwill began in 1981 when he joined the Grand TraverseRadiologists as the fi fth physician. I was their Retirement Trust Officer and Ed and hisassociates were my clients. In 1994 Ed asked if he could join me on a two week deer andantelope hunting trip to Montana. He drew a non-resident license and I did not. That waswhen he told me he had never hunted big game before. On our trips, Ed would bring a hard back novel and take meticulous notes. He would return home and dictate these on cassettes for our pleasure later in the year. Ed is a student of western history and in particular, American Indian history which is used extensively in his writings. These stories tell of a 43 year old who travels west and north in pursuit of antelope, deer, elk, caribou, waterfowl and upland birds. Ed makes a few mistakes but learns fast and soon becomes a sportsman with the highest regard for the animals he pursues. These are a collection of tapes that have been edited by me for this book.Ed lives and practices medicine in Traverse City, Michigan when not at his mountain tophome in Big Sky, Montana. I have taken an early retirement, moved to Helena, Montanawith my wife where we purchased horses and began a new chapter of our own.
