Doppel Banger

Book Description

Firefighter by day, drag queen by night. This one of a kind standalone romantic comedy in the Queerly Devoted series by Sarah Robinson is a boundary pushing bisexual romance as firefighter Mike Dougherty—stage name Madame Michelle in drag—meets Isa Reyes, a Filipina crisis management professional who has no interest in adding any more drama to her life. Isa Reyes is five foot two and exists solely on her father’s lumpia and her mother’s cynicism to fuel her sixty hour work weeks in crisis management. When she’s not working behind the scenes on the latest political scandal, hostile corporate takeover, or bailing a client out of jail, Isa finds herself sitting on the sidelines of her best friends’ lives. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride, Isa is tired of watching life pass her by and is determined to find the perfect alpha male to ride off into the sunset with. In walks the alpha male of all alpha males—Michael Dougherty, lieutenant firefighter at DC Fire & EMS and Mr. July in the charity firefighter calendar, and her new point of contact for her contract. It’s her job to fix the department’s reputation and he’s there to give her everything she needs…in more ways than just professional. But there’s a lot more to Mike than meets the eye and when she runs into him on stage in a very different context, she realizes that everything she thought she wanted in a man might be in question. Battling the expectations of her family, the professionalism of her job, her lifetime living on the sidelines, and the pull of her heart, Isa navigates her own stereotypes as she takes a leap onto center stage.

Tumors of the Central Nervous System, Volume 5

Book Description

The most recent developments in diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of Gliomas (glioblastoma) in the brain are presented. The importance of personalized medicine and clinical validation for targeted therapy are discussed. The identification of various types of biomarkers (determined by molecular genetics) is included, along with their advantages and limitations as markers in tumor detection and diagnosis. The identification and validation of brain cancer (glioblastoma) genes are discussed. The role of cancer stem cells in the initiation and persistence of malignant gliomas is explained; response of glioblastoma cancer stem cells to various growth factors, such as epidermal growth factor receptor kinase inhibitor, is explained. The use of surgical resection, chemotherapy (e.g., temozolomide), immunotherapy, and radiation therapy for glioblastoma patients is included. Biological impediments for chemotherapy and radiotherapy for malignant glioblastoma are pointed out. Standard (established) as well as newer imaging modalities (proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy) are discussed. Also included are proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in intracranial gliomas, and the use of proton magnetic spectroscopic imaging in determining the infiltration zone in gliomas. The role of molecular signaling in the CNS cancer development is explained, including cell death signaling in glioblastoma multiforme. The AACR Annual Meeting is a must-attend event for cancer researchers and the broader cancer community. This year's theme, "Delivering Cures Through Cancer Science," reinforces the inextricable link between research and advances in patient care. The theme will be evident throughout the meeting as the latest, most exciting discoveries are presented in every area of cancer research. There will be a number of presentations that include exciting new data from cutting-edge clinical trials as well as companion presentations that spotlight the science behind the trials and implications for delivering improved care to patients. This book contains abstracts 2697-5293 presented on April 19-20, 2016, at the AACR Annual Meeting.

Prion Diseases and Copper Metabolism

Book Description

International authorities here investigate research into the prion diseases which include Scrapie of sheep, BSE the "Mad Cow" disease, and CJD one of the human diseases. The role of metals in these diseases has become of great importance, linking it with some of the changes in Alzheimer's disease. The book focuses on metabolism of copper and manganese which are found in these diseases. It stems from proceedings of the international workshop at Christ's College, Cambridge University in 2001. After an introduction on the history of research into the diseases, there are discussions on the effects of copper on biochemical properties and prion proteins of brain cells, and newer techniques for their study. There is also a section on the relationship of Alzheimers disease to prion diseases. - Focuses on metabolism of copper and manganese, which are found in Scrapie of sheep; BSE, the "Mad Cow" disease; and CJD, one of the human prion diseases - Discusses the effects of copper on biochemical properties, prion proteins of brain cells and new techniques for their study - Stems from the proceedings of the international workshop at Christ's College, Cambridge University in 2001
