What does realism about the quantum state imply? What follows when quantum theory is applied without restriction, if need be, to the whole universe? These are the questions which an illustrious team of philosophers and physicists debate in this volume. All the contributors are agreed on realism, and on the need, or the aspiration, for a theory that unites micro- and macroworlds, at least in principle. But the further claim argued by some is that if you allow the Schrödinger equation unrestricted application, supposing the quantum state to be something physically real, then this universe is one of countlessly many others, constantly branching in time, all of which are real. The result is the many worlds theory, also known as the Everett interpretation of quantum mechanics. The contrary claim sees this picture of many worlds as in no sense inherent in quantum mechanics, even when the latter is allowed unrestricted scope and even given that the quantum state itself is something physically real. For this picture of branching worlds fails to make physical sense, let alone common sense, even on its own terms. The status of these worlds, what they are made of, is never adequately explained. Ordinary ideas about time and identity over time become hopelessly compromised. The concept of probability itself is brought into question. This picture of many branching worlds is inchoate, it is a vision, an error. There are realist alternatives to many worlds, some even that preserve the Schrödinger equation unchanged. Twenty specially written essays, accompanied by commentaries and discussions, examine these claims and counterclaims in depth. They focus first on the question of ontology, the existence of worlds (Part 1 and 2), second on the interpretation of probability (Parts 3 and 4), and third on alternatives or additions to many worlds (Parts 5 and 6). The introduction offers a helpful guide to the arguments for the Everett interpretation, particularly as they have been formulated in the last two decades.

In the first volume we based quantum mechanics on the objective description of macroscopic devices. The further development of the quantum mechanics of atoms, molecules, and collision processes has been described in [2]. In this context also the usual description of composite systems by tensor products of Hilbert spaces has been introduced. This method can be formally extrapolated to systems composed of "many" ele mentary systems, even arbitrarily many. One formerly had the opinion that this "extrapolated quantum mechanics" is a more comprehensive theory than the objec tive description of macrosystems, an opinion which generated unsurmountable diffi culties for explaining the measuring process. With respect to our foundation of quan tum mechanics on macroscopic objectivity, this opinion would mean that our founda tion is no foundation at all. The task of this second volume is to attain a compatibility between the objective description of macrosystems and an extrapolated quantum mechanics. Thus in X we establish the "statistical mechanics" of macrosystems as a theory more compre hensive than an extrapolated quantum mechanics. On this basis we solve the problem of the measuring process in quantum mechan ics, in XI developing a theory which describes the measuring process as an interaction between microsystems and a macroscopic device. This theory also allows to calculate "in principle" the observable measured by a device. Neither an incorporation of consciousness nor a mysterious imagination such as "collapsing" wave packets are necessary.

Information Macrodynamics (IMD) belong to an interdisciplinary science that represents a new theoretical and computer-based methodology for a system informational descriptionand improvement,including various activities in such areas as thinking, intelligent processes, communications, management, and other nonphysical subjects with their mutual interactions, informational superimposition, and theinformation transferredbetweeninteractions. The main IMD goal is to reveal the information regularities, mathematically expressed by the considered variation principle (VP), as a mathematical tool to extractthe regularities and define the model, whichdescribes theregularities. The IMD regularities and mechanisms are the results of the analytical solutions and are not retained by logical argumentation, rational introduction, and a reasonable discussion. The IMD's information computer modeling formalism includes a human being (as an observer, carrier and producer ofinformation), with a restoration of the model during the objectobservations.

Daily reports appeared of international debt crises, of the covert bankruptcy of deposit insurance, and of the near bankruptcy of one great financial institution after another. The great stock market crash of October 19 and 20, 1987, demonstrated that extreme instability can happen. In 1933, financial markets in the United States and throughout the capitalist world collapsed. In the light of historical experience, the past 55 years are the anomaly. The papers collected in this volume come from various backgrounds and research paradigms. A common theme runs through these papers that makes the collection both interesting and important: The authors take seriously the obvious evidence that capitalist economies progress through time by lurching.
