The Topography was written by a Portuguese cleric, Doctor Antonio de Sosa, who was captured by Algerian corsairs in 1577 and held as a Barbary slave for over four years while awaiting ransom. Sosa''s work is a fascinating description of a city at the crossroads of civilizations, with a sophisticated multilingual population of Turks, Arabs, Moriscos, Berbers, Jews, Christian captives, and converts to Islam from across the world.




Early Modern Islamo-Christian Dialogue


Book Description

This dissertation approaches the classic dichotomy of Christianity and Islam in the Mediterranean, and teases out nuances of their relationship during the early modern period. It presents four chapters on religious figures, miracles, holy war, and linguistic capital which demonstrate four mechanisms that Christianity and Islam used as conduits to advance their narratives. Many times these were mechanisms of a polemical nature, but they also demonstrate the parallels that existed between the two worldviews. While certain genres of writing were deliberately structured polemics, polemical arguments conditioned a variety of writers' perspectives and observations in other genres. Because of their polemical history, these two major Mediterranean religions were familiar with the things that separated them, and many times they exaggerated those differences in order to stand out. These parallels and differences are studied departing from a variety of texts produced by Mediterranean itinerants, many of them based out of Spain. The major text of study is Antonio de Sosa's [Topografía de Arge], published in 1612 but written decades earlier to describe the writer's surroundings and observations during his captivity in Algiers. Sosa's text serves as a point of departure into a bevy of selected topics that elucidate how Islamic and Christian writers and travelers presented themselves and their opposition in their historical artifacts. Sosa very often ridicules local religious figures, the marabouts, as fools, and he furthermore derides the Muslim people who have the gullibility to believe in them; in so doing, he seeks to discredit Islam as a whole. To broaden the focus of these critiques, I place Sosa's comments in the context of Islamo-Christian polemical writings and arguments that stretch from the beginnings of Islam to the early modern period. Subsequent chapters focus on miracles, holy war narrative, and language as linguistic capital as points of departure to better understand the nature of the relationship between Christianity and Islam at this time.




Time in Early Modern Islam

The prophet Muhammad and the early Islamic community radically redefined the concept of time that they had inherited from earlier religions' beliefs and practices. This new temporal system, based on a lunar calendar and era, was complex and required sophistication and accuracy. From the ninth to the sixteenth centuries, it was the Muslim astronomers of the Ottoman, Safavid and Mughal empires who were responsible for the major advances in mathematics, astronomy and astrology. This fascinating study compares the Islamic concept of time, and its historical and cultural significance, across these three great empires. Each empire, while mindful of earlier models, created a new temporal system, fashioning a new solar calendar and era and a new round of rituals and ceremonies from the cultural resources at hand. Offering an analysis of Christian-Muslim dialogue across four centuries, this book highlights those voices of ecumenical tone which have more often used the Qur’an for drawing the two faiths together rather than pushing them apart, and amplifies the voice of the Qur’an itself. Finding that there is tremendous ecumenical ground between Christianity and Islam in the voices of their own scholars, this book ranges from a period of declining ecumenism during the first three centuries of Islam, to a period of resurging ecumenism during the most recent century until now. Among the ecumenical voices in the Christian-Muslim dialogue, this book points out that the Qur’an itself is possibly the strongest of those voices. These findings are cause for, and evidence of, hope for the Christian–Muslim relationship: that although agreement may never be reached, dialogue has led at times to very real mutual understanding and appreciation of the religious other. Providing a tool for those pursuing understanding and mutual appreciation between the Islamic and Christian faiths, this book will be of interest to scholars and students of Islam, the Qur’an and the history of Christian-Muslim relations.

Stereotypes and prejudices play of course a certain role in every representation or vision of the Other. In regard to Islam they are, however, of a particularly long and rich history. Already after one century from its emergence Islam was seen as a danger to Christianity. John of Damascus granted already in 8th century a complete, though totally ignorant view of the Muslim civilization. Muhammad was depicted by him as an Antichrist and he declared Islam to be a conspiracy against Christianity. The medieval reception of Islam is shown very accurately in the famous Divina Comedia by Dante, where the reader finds Mohammed placed nowhere else but in hell: "(...) see how Mahomet is mangled! Before he goes Ali in tears, his face cleft from chin to forelock; and all the others thou seest here were in life sowers of scandal and schism and therefore are thus cloven". Untrue and unfair depictions of Islam in Europe are found in Catholic theology by Thomas Aquinas, who is still regarded by the Church as its most prominent philosopher. Ignorance about Islam may seem understandable as far as fear of religious challenge is concerned, since many critics of Islam felt it was their duty to defend the truth about God. Many of them depicted the Muslim culture in a completely wrong way because of the very fact that they had never been in real contact with that culture. More detailed investigations about what was behind the teachings would, however, needed to be based on direct encounter. Accounts on Islam based on personal experience would have been then at least more objective and




Practices of Coexistence

They deal with images, projections, and perceptions, based on various experiences of coexistence. Religious Refugees in the Early Modern World


Book Description

The religious refugee first emerged as a mass phenomenon in the late fifteenth century. Over the following two and a half centuries, millions of Jews, Muslims, and Christians were forced from their homes and into temporary or permanent exile. Their migrations across Europe and around the globe shaped the early modern world and profoundly affected literature, art, and culture. Economic and political factors drove many expulsions, but religion was the factor most commonly used to justify them. This was also the period of religious revival known as the Reformation. This book explores how reformers' ambitions to purify individuals and society fueled movements to purge ideas, objects, and people considered religiously alien or spiritually contagious. It aims to explain religious ideas and movements of the Reformation in nontechnical and comparative language.
