Albertus Magnus' Egyptian Secrets is a grimoire dating to the early 18th century, originally of German stock. Translated later to English and released by the famous L W deLaurence, it is comprised of three volumes and contains spells, prayers, tips on husbandry, healing, hunting, and much more.Much of the lore is bizarre and some may be an example of hidden meaning. It was certainly influenced by the Petit Albert of slightly earlier French design and contains some similar content. It may be deemed, by some, as containing a degree of black magic, and calls upon the demonic several times although it is primarily for healing.

Grand Grimoire

This present book is a grimoire which presents some challenge to classify and describe. Written relatively recently (by the standards of grimoires!) it contains content from a half dozen other works- The Clavicle of Solomon, Black Pullet, and a work by Trithemius, among others. We may best categorize this work as a compiled grimoire, similar to the Petit Albert, or the "Egyptian Secrets" of Albertus Magnus.This work should be distinguished from the older "Grand Grimoire" used to summon Lucifuge Rofocale as this present work is more than half about magical talismans and involves the use of planchettes in a spiritist setting for mediumship. It apparently was used by some sort of occult order or group at some time and listed fourteen distinct degrees one could attain to as well as leaving every other page blank, presumably for note-taking during lectures or courses of some kind.

Today we associate the Renaissance with painting, sculpture, and architecture—the “major” arts. Yet contemporaries often held the “minor” arts—gem-studded goldwork, richly embellished armor, splendid tapestries and embroideries, music, and ephemeral multi-media spectacles—in much higher esteem. Isabella d’Este, Marchesa of Mantua, was typical of the Italian nobility: she bequeathed to her children precious stone vases mounted in gold, engraved gems, ivories, and antique bronzes and marbles; her favorite ladies-in-waiting, by contrast, received mere paintings. Renaissance patrons and observers extolled finely wrought luxury artifacts for their exquisite craftsmanship and the symbolic capital of their components; paintings and sculptures in modest materials, although discussed by some literati, were of lesser consequence. This book endeavors to return to the mainstream material long marginalized as a result of historical and ideological biases of the intervening centuries.
