The Beats and the Academy

Book Description

The Beats and the Academy marks the first sustained effort to train a scholarly eye on the dynamics of the relationship between Beat writers and the academic institutions in which they taught. Rather than assuming the relationship between Beat writers and institutions of higher education was only a hostile one, The Beats and the Academy begins with the premise that influence between the two flows in both directions. Beat writers' suspicion of established institutions was a significant aspect of their postwar countercultural allure. Their anti-establishment aesthetic and countercultural stance led Beat writers to be critical of postwar academic institutions that tended to dismiss them as a passing social phenomenon. Even today, Beat writing still meets resistance in an academy that questions the relevance of their writing and ideas. But this picture, like any generalization, is far too easy. The Beat relationship to the academy is one of negotiation, rather than negation. Many Beats strove for academic recognition, and quite a few received it. And despite hostility to their work both in the postwar era and today, Beat works have made it into syllabi, conference resentations, journal articles, and monographs. The Beats and the Academy deepens our understanding of this relationship by emphasizing how institutional friction between the Beats and institutions of higher education has shaped our understanding of Beat Generation literature and culture—and what this relationship between Beat writers and the academy might suggest about their legacy for future scholars.

Jesus and Politics

Book Description

The Christian life isn’t about doing things the easy way—it’s about living as Christ even in a hostile environment. After reading this book, you will understand how God wants to use Christians to change the world and how you can walk with the Holy Spirit no matter what call He places on your life. Using her sixteen-year political career as a backdrop, Bunni Pounds gives readers practical tools for discipling a nation one heart at a time and living the Christian life extravagantly, even in a hostile environment. In Jesus and Politics, Pounds lays out the importance of Christians engaging in politics, government, and other spheres of influence to impact systems and individuals. Sharing her divine appointments and unlikely interactions with prominent figures, Pounds gives readers a front-row seat to: Witness the power of prayer as she supported a congressman through a terminal cancer diagnosis during a national campaign. Discover how a word from God on an airplane shifted a lawmaker into a new, more influential prominent position. Learn how she set her heart free from bitterness and unforgiveness after a million-dollar congressional race by paying off her opponent's debt. See how a dream about a congressman from the other side of the political aisle led to an ongoing ministry relationship that has transcended their political differences. But this is more than a book of stories. Jesus and Politics is a book about Jesus that equips readers to: Cultivate intimacy with Jesus, even in a hostile culture and amid life's pressures. Effectively share the gospel, disciple others, and stand up for truth in various settings. Engage in politics and various spheres of government to protect liberty in America. Reminding readers that our liberty requires our participation, Jesus and Politics is an indispensable resource for those seeking to make a lasting impact for Christ and embark on a transformative journey to live out their destiny, preserve America, and make a difference for eternity.

War on the Border

Book Description

The dramatic story of how over a century ago, the United States and Mexico went to war over their border, a conflict that still resonates today. In 1916, Mexican rebel Pancho Villa staged a bloody raid on a US border town, the latest incident in simmering tensions between the two countries. In response the United States launched the year-long Punitive Expedition—a military invasion of Mexican territory. Commanded by General John J. Pershing, who would go on to lead American troops in Europe a year later during World War I, the expedition included US Army troops, the National Guard, the Texas Rangers, and the legendary African-American Buffalo Soldiers. It was the first time the Army used automobiles and trucks, and Curtiss Jenny airplanes did reconnaissance, another first; even a young George Patton was involved. But despite several bloody encounters, the Punitive Expedition ultimately proved unsuccessful, and its contentious history continues to resonate in US-Mexico border relations today.
