Excerpt from Mathematical Tables for Class-Room Use Explanations, prepared especially for this volume, will render the use of the tables easily understood, and these are accompanied by remarks regarding the degree of precision to be expected in interpolated tabular values. Exercises for students are given at the end of each chapter. It is hoped that this little book may assist both teachers and students in saving time and labor, and thus tend to promote economy and efficiency. Excerpt from Bell's Mathematical Tables: Together With a Collection of Mathematical Formulae, Definitions, and Theorems My thanks are due to my friends, Professor Alfred W. Porter and Professor E. N. Da C. Andrade of London, and to Professor L. V. King of Montreal, for many valuable hints, and for reading part of the ms.; and to the publishers for the care they have bestowed upon my work. Excerpt from Elementary Integrals: A Short Table The integrals can also be found by using tanx as a new variable: and the reader may find it instructive to obtain the same results by this method. Excerpt from Elementary Arithmetic Probably there is no branch of school study in which the work to-day is more unsatisfactory than in arithmetic; and yet accuracy in number work lies at the very base of efficiency in business affairs. Since much of the inefficiency of the time is clearly attributable to vagaries in educational methods, the exploitation of theories sometimes fantastic and demoralizing, there is a wide and growing desire for a return to the efficiency of an earlier period, when sane and conservative counsels were followed; when the drill was sufficient to insure a ready command of arithmetical processes by the pupil, and the learner was practically trained for the business of life. Truly conservative as this new series is planned to be, in reviving those features of the work which made for efficiency in the past, it is thoroughly modern in its adaption to the conditions of to-day. The obsolete is eliminated. An application is made to the life of the present time in both thought and environment. So many are the distinctive features of this series, and so definite and positive are the principles upon which it has been constructed, that a brief statement of some of the more important of these features should be made in advance, to give a clear idea of the plan and purpose of the books. Since the ear as well as the eye is a potent means of fixing in the mind that which is to be committed to memory, there is every reason for oral drill work in the mastery of tables, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Mathematical and Physical Tables for the Use of Students in Technical Schools and Colleges This set of tables embodies in a compact form useful mathematical tables and the more important formulae and constants required in the teaching of mathematics and physics. The tabulation of formulae and constants gives to the student a more comprehensive and less confused idea of the instruction he receives throughout his two or three years of study, besides providing him with a necessary work of reference for the Physical, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Laboratories and the Mathematical Class room. The tables should therefore become a constant companion to the student of Mathematics, Physics, and Engineering. The student of Chemical Physics will find a number of the tables of especial value. Considerable pains have been taken to obtain correct data, but since a large number of constants have still to be determined, blanks in the tables are unavoidable. These we hope gradually to fill up, either by availing ourselves of the experiments of others or those made in our own laboratories. Although not specially designed for the use of candidates for examinations, we believe that the tables will be of assistance to students, especially those in the classes of the recently instituted course of practical mathematics of the science and art department.
