Loves Me, Loves Me Not

Book Description

“A single flow’r he sent me, since we met. All tenderly his messenger he chose; Deep-hearted, pure, with scented dew still wet—One perfect rose.” —Dorothy Parker Welcome to the mysterious and sometimes scandalous world of the language of flowers. Since the days of Queen Victoria (and earlier the harems of the Middle East) flowers have allowed lovers and friends to express themselves without saying a word. In Loves Me, Loves Me Not, author and illustrator Peter Loewer explores the fascinating history of floral messages. In this book you'll find intriguing plant lore, unexpected historical connections, or simply an opportunity to connect with a beloved in a unique way. Confess unrequited love with a daffodil. Show happiness with primroses. Wish someone luck with a four-leaf clover. Make your declaration of love not with a rose, but with a tulip! With intriguing stories and stunning full-color illustrations, Loves Me, Loves Me Not, introduces you to flowers that have been conveying message for centuries. As Loewer says: "The language of flowers is a delightful idea. In the world of cell phones and mass communications, sending a simple bouquet that tells a tale of love and affection seems to be a great idea whose time has come again."

Other Banalities

Book Description

Melanie Klein is one of the few analysts whose body of work has inspired sociologists, philosophers, religious scholars, literary critics and political theorists, all attracted to the cross-fertilisation of her ideas. Other Banalities represents a long over-due exploration of her legacy, including contributions from acclaimed interdisciplinary scholars and practitioners. The contributors situate Klein within the history of the psychoanalytic movement, investigate her key theoretical and clinical advances, and look at how her thought has informed contemporary perspectives in the behavioural sciences and humanities. Topics covered range from Klein’s major psychological theories to clinical pathology, child development, philosophy, sociology, politics, religion, ethics and aesthetics. This volume reflects the auspicious future for Kleinian revivalism and demonstrates the broad relevance of Kleinian thought. It will be of great interest to scholars and practitioners of psychology, psychoanalysis and psychotherapy.

Love in Contemporary British Drama

Book Description

Despite the recent turn to affects and emotions in the humanities and despite the unceasing popularity of romantic and erotic love as a motif in fictional works of all genres, the subject has received surprisingly little attention in academic studies of contemporary drama. Love in Contemporary British Drama reflects the appeal of love as a topic and driving force in dramatic works with in-depth analyses of eight pivotal plays from the past three decades. Following an interdisciplinary and historical approach, the study collects and condenses theories of love from philosophy and sociology to derive persisting discourses and to examine their reoccurrence and transformation in contemporary plays. Special emphasis is put on narratives of love’s compensatory function and precariousness and on how modifications of these narratives epitomise the peculiarities of emotional life in the social and cultural context of the present. Based on the assumption that drama is especially inclined to draw on shared narratives for representations of love, the book demonstrates that love is both a window to remnants of the past in the present and a proper subject matter for drama in times in which the suitability of the dramatic form has been questioned.
