Excerpt from Essays on Christianity, Paganism, and Superstition The present edition is a reissue of the Works of Thomas De Quincey. The series is based upon the American Edition of De Quincey's Works, pub lished originally in twenty-two volumes. After that edition was issued, a complete English edition was published in Edinburgh and was edited and revised in part by the author. This edition con tained changes and additions, and the opportunity has been taken, in reissuing the American edition, to incorporate the new material which appeared in the English edition. At the same time, the arrangement of the several productions is more systematic and orderly than was possible when the collection was first made, at different intervals, under difficulties which render the work of the first editor especially praiseworthy. In the final volume, an introduction to the series sets forth the plan carried out in this new arrangement, and that volume also contains a very full index to the entire series. Throughout the series, the notes of the editor are distinguished from those of the author. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from From Augustus to Augustine: Essays Studies Dealing With the Contact and Conflict of Classic Paganism and Christianity I must not omit here that superb collection of mono graphs: A Dictionary of Christian Biography, etc., etc., edited by Smith and Wace, London, four volumes, 1877 - 1887. All the contributors are by now dead, the last being Viscount Bryce, with whom I had the honour to correspond in 1911 and in 1921. The most eminent name, I believe, was that of Joseph Barber Lightfoot. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Paganism and Christianity If any great classical writers of the ancient world, like Seneca or Cicero, could come to life again, nothing surely would astonish them more than the descriptions they might read in our books of the state of the world when they left it, of its moral depravity, and the absence of the religious idea. One would gladly hear what they would say to it all; but, falling that, it only remains to enter as much as possible into their tone of thought, and to present the case between Christianity and Paganism as they might do if they could now speak for themselves, and had at their command eighteen centuries of Church history and all writings of the Fathers and theologians. Excerpt from The Establishment of Christianity and the Proscription of Paganism Since the Object in dealing with these particular prob lems and Constantine's legislation for the Christian Church was merely to aid in the comprehension of his general policy, it has seemed advisable to omit discussion of the Emperor's laws against heterodox Christianity. The ques tion of heresy under the Christian emperors is so intricate as to demand separate treatment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Who and what was pagan depended on the outlook of the observer, as Christopher Jones shows in this fresh and penetrating analysis. Treating paganism as a historical construct rather than a fixed entity, Between Christian and Pagan uncovers the fluid ideas, rituals, and beliefs that Christians and pagans shared in Late Antiquity.
