Excerpt from Fifth Census of Canada 1911, Vol. 4: Agriculture The total land area of the Dominion is placed at acres, of which, at the date of the census, the nine provinces occupied acres. The remaining area (1911) consists of the Yukon acres) and the Northwest territories acres). The areas of the Yukon and the Northwest territories are not taken into account in the calculations of the tables in this volume, because no appreciable extent of land in them is likely to be devot ed to agriculture, before all the land within the provinces has been occupied. According to calculations made by the Census and Statistics Office in 1909 and revised recently, the fo'lowing table shows, for 1911, the areas occupied and an estimate of areas possible of occupation as farm lands in the Dominion. The estimates of land capable of future occupation are based partly upon the amount of farm land occupied at the date of the census, 1911, and partly upon a percentage of the total area, fixed arbitrarily, but having reference to the more or less definitely ascertained facts, as to the character of the lands in each province and the increases both in land occupied as farms and of the area of improved land.
