First European Simulation Congress ESC 83

Book Description

Welcome to Aachen and to the First European Simulation Congress ESC83, a triennial international conference jointly promoted by ASIM/GI, DBSS, SIMS and UKSC. ESC83 is organized by ASIM/GI,. supported by SCS and IMACS, and sponsored by NGI (section for simulation). It takes place at the Karman Auditorium of the Aachen Technical Univer sity, FRG. The aim of ESC83 is to cover all aspects of modeling and simulation in theory and practice, to promote the exchange of knowlewdge and experience between different international research groups in this field, and to strengthen the international contact between developers and users of modeling and simulation techniques. On the occasion of the Congress people of scientific and engineering disciplines will meet to discuss the state of the art and future activities and developments. A large number of contributed papers has been strictly examined and selected by the Scientific Committee to guarantee a high international standard. The book contains the accepted papers that will be presented at the Congress. The papers have been classified according to the following keywords.

Digital Computer Applications to Process Control

Book Description

Considers the application of modern control engineering on digital computers with a view to improving productivity and product quality, easing supervision of industrial processes and reducing energy consumption and pollution. The topics covered may be divided into two main subject areas: (1) applications of digital control - in the chemical and oil industries, in water turbines, energy and power systems, robotics and manufacturing, cement, metallurgical processes, traffic control, heating and cooling; (2) systems theoretical aspects of digital control - adaptive systems, control aspects, multivariable systems, optimization and reliability, modelling and identification, real-time software and languages, distributed systems and data networks. Contains 84 papers.

Scientific Computing on Supercomputers

Book Description

The International Workshops on "The Use of Supercomputers in Theoretical Science" have become a tradition at the Univer sity of Antwerp, Belgium. The first one took place in 1984. This volume combines the proceedings of the second work shop (December 12, 1985), of the third (June 16, 1987) and of the fourth (June 9, 1988). The principal aim of the International Workshops is to present the state-of-the-art in scientific high speed computa tion. Indeed, during the past ten years computational science has become a third methodology with merits equal to the theo retical and experimental sciences. Regretfully, access to supercomputers remains limited for academic researchers. None theless, supercomputers have become a major tool for scientists in a wide variety of scientific fields, and they lead to a realistic solution of problems that could not be solved a decade ago. It is a pleasure to thank the Belgian National Science Foundation (NFWO-FNRS) for the sponsoring of all the workshops. These workshops are organized in the framework of the Third Cy cle "Vectorization, Parallel Processing and Supercomputers", which is also funded by the NFWO-FNRS. The other sponsor I want to thank is the University of Antwerp, where the workshops took place. The University of Antwerp (UIA), together with the NFWO-FNRS, are also the main sponsors of the ALPHA-project, which gives the scientists of Belgium the opportunity to obtain an easy supercomputer connection.

The Testability of Distributed Real-Time Systems

Book Description

BY H. KOPETZ A real-time computer system must provide the intended service in two di mensions: the functional (value) dimension and the temporal dimension. The verification of a real-time system implementation is thus necessarily more com plex than the verification of a non-real-time system which has to be checked in the value dimension only. Since the formal verification techniques of temporal properties have not yet matured to the point where these techniques can be used in practical system development, systematic design and testing are the only alternatives for the development of dependable real-time systems. At present, up to and more than fifty percent of the development eff'ort of complex real-time computer systems is spent on testing. The test activities are thus a significant cost element in any real-time system project. The attack on this cost element has to proceed from two fronts: the design for testability and the development of a systematic test methodology supported by an appropriate tool set. This book covers both of these topics.

Fehlertolerierende Rechensysteme / Fault-Tolerant Computing Systems

Book Description

Advances in Petri Nets 1987

Book Description

The aim of these series of volumes "Advances in Petri Nets" is to present to the general computer science community the most significant recent results with regard to the development in the area. The main source of the papers are the annual European Workshops on Applications and Theory of Petri Nets"; the highest ranked papers from the past workshops are considered for the series, i.e., they are again reviewed and accordingly revised or extended. In addition to the workshop papers, the "Advances" also present invited papers. The present volume Advances in Petri Nets 1987 covers the 7th "European Workshop on Applications and Theory of Petri Nets" held in Oxford, Great Britain, in June 1986. It also contains a survey on complexity of problems related to Petri nets written by R.R. Howell and L.E. Rosier. A special feature of this volume is a bibliography on Petri nets, containing more than 2000 entries.
