Danish Greenland

Book Description

Excerpt from Danish Greenland: Its People and Its Products Several reasons have led the author to believe that this work might have claims to other than Danish readers, and that an English edition might be desirable. Long ago the series of expeditions in search of a North-west passage and of Sir John Franklin and his companions drew some public attention to Greenland. The Danish establishments along the coast of Davis Strait, on the very threshold of the extensive polar regions explored and surveyed on these occasions, were frequently visited by the English vessels. But of late years expeditions aiming at a more general investigation of the regions around the North Pole have given rise to several grand and bold undertakings more or less connected with the extensive coasts of Greenland. What can be more adventurous than spending an Arctic winter in navigating the ocean on a piece of ice. And yet this has of late been achieved, once along the east and once along the west coast of Greenland. For very important special explorations of the remotest part of this country we have to thank the renowned American pioneers, Kane, Hayes, and Hall. On its desolate eastern shores a German expedition has made valuable discoveries. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
