Highways and Byways of the South (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Highways and Byways of the South Yet I cannot say that Florida on closer acquaintance seemed quite worthy of its name; for if you would have a profusion of flowers, you must nurse and coax them. They are not such a spontaneous product of the climate as one would expect. The soil is too poor, and nowhere did the blossoms brighten and gladden the earth as our spring flowers do in the North. Indeed, the aspect of the country is for the most part rather monotonously sober - an unending, sandy level overspread with pine woods, and a low, spiny under growth of palmetto scrub. After leaving Jacksonville, where I had disembarked, I first of all visited St. Augustine, and saw its ancient fort and massive city gateway. The fort is of genuine mediaeval type, the only one of its kind in America. Its gray, weatherworn stones proclaim its great age, the rooms are satisfactorily gloomy and dungeon-like, and you can trace the course of the old moat round about. Both the fort and the gateway date back to the time when St. Augustine was a Spanish walled town. The place itself has one or two curious narrow thorough fares and odd survivals of bygone architecture, but its prevailing characteristics are those of a fashionable pleasure resort. All the open fields on the outskirts have been taken possession of by the golf-players. Once, when I had stopped to watch a game, an old colored man came along and leaned over the picket fence near me. I want to see what they gwine do, he said. Good gracious alive! See whar that tall man sen' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Southward in Roamer

Book Description

Excerpt from Southward in Roamer: Being a Description of the Inside Route From New York to Florida This lucid and intelligent description of the inside passage from New York to Florida was written for The Rudder by Mr. H. C Roome, a gentleman who has frequently made the trip in his yacht Roamer. The value of a narrative of this kind is apparent to those who have made the passage without any guide except the excellent charts furnished by the Government. While they are essential to proper navigation, there is a deal of information that they do not give, and which is conducive to safe and comfortable voyaging. But while the yachtsman in making this passage will undoubtedly be greatly aided by Commodore Roome's narrative, he must not fail to provide himself with a full set of charts and such other publications as will be of service. By paying attention to Commodore Roome's remarks, and following the course on the chart, no man will have any difficulty in making this long voyage. Florida Roundabout (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Florida Roundabout M Y sincere thanks are extended to the Huntington Hart ford Foundation Of Pacific Palisades, California, for furnishing me with congenial quarters in a delightful place, hidden deep in a beautiful canyon Of the Santa Monica Mountains, to work on this book. The Foundation makes no requirement whatsoever Of those accepted for residence to report about What they are working on, Offering complete, utter freedom for the creative worker to do as he wishes, a thing that can happen only in the Western World and in this case by means Of American capitalism in the person of Mr. Huntington Hartford Of The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (translation: the A 8c P), possessing that rare thing, a cultural conscience. The State rivalry between California and Florida being what it is, I am sure it will tickle him and everyone else concerned, including the wonderful staff at the Founda tion headed by Dr. John Vincent, that I was able to work an entire summer at this excellent California institution with out the necessity Of telling anyone until now that the subject Of my labors is a place called Florida. Where to Go in Florida (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Where to Go in Florida He also hopes - by attracting good people to Green Cove - to add greatly to its material prosperity. Hitherto this most desirable location has made itself known through its own merits only, no efforts having yet been made to bring it into general notice; consequently many tourists have passed it by altogether. You may, at first sight, be a little disappointed. The general aspect of things is, perhaps, primitive, and somewhat strange to the Northern eye. Yet this is not unpleasing; and the place has a wonderful capacity for growing upon one's affections. A single Winter passed there con firms your love for it. You always want to go back to it again. You realize a moral as well as a physical benefit from this communion with the primitive world. The author has endeavored, in this pamphlet, to state simple facts. If anything here seems too highly colored, it should be attributed wholly to the writer's affection for the place: or as a sort of mental thank-offer ing for restoration to health. Dr. Rigby's Papers on Florida (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Dr. Rigby's Papers on Florida In bringing this book before the public, it has been my endeavor to give as brief a description of every portion of the State of Florida as would still give the reader a good, fair knowledge of the different Coun ties, Cities, Towns, etc. Having visited the State several years ago to recruit my health, and finding the climate so very delightful, I have since spent the greater part of eight years in traveling through the State, visiting every county, investigating its soil, products, etc., to my own satisfaction; and in a great many instances I have been over the ground several times during this period. A great deal of my travel has been in the saddle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
