History for Graded and District Schools (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from History for Graded and District Schools "Truth is one! And in all lands beneath the sun, Whoso has eyes to see may see The tokens of its unity." The purpose of this book is to present a framework of history for the graded and district schools; that is, for children from six to about fifteen years of age. The effort has been made to present the material in such connection throughout the grades that it would gradually develop in pupils' minds the idea of the unity of history, and thus finally lead them to feel that history is an unbroken stream of life, of which the present in general, and their lives in particular, constitute an important part. It is not thought that the material presented here for each grade will be entirely sufficient for teachers who have exceptional advantages for carrying on primary history work. It is intended as a general framework, furnishing, perhaps, the greater part of the material which the teacher having all the grades will be able to teach, but which the teacher having but one or two grades and good library advantages should use to build and to enlarge upon, according to particular circumstances. Like all outlines, it must be filled in with material drawn from books, pictures, maps, stories, poems, and other illustrative material, in order to be made effective. It is simply a skeleton; the teacher and pupil must clothe it with flesh, and breathe into it the pulsating life of history. To aid toward this end, in addition to the history of which this book is an outline, a list of books has been suggested at the close of the outline of work for each grade. In making these lists care has been taken to give teachers such information as will enable them easily to judge something of the nature and fitness of each book for their particular needs. History in the Elementary Schools Methods, Courses of Study, Bibliographies (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from History in the Elementary Schools Methods, Courses of Study, Bibliographies The course of study outlined in the following pages is first of all practicable. It has been subjected to the test of teachers and supervisors in elementary schools of the country and the city, and of Normal Training Schools. It is the result of years of experience in public schools con ducted under ordinary conditions. It is easily adaptable to either graded or ungraded schools. While it provides for a complete course of study in history from the first to the eighth grades inclusive, it is so arranged that it may be used in connection with any rational plan of correlation of history with other subjects, especially with industrial training, literature and geog raphy. This is particularly true of the outlines for the first four grades. In ungraded schools and those only partially graded, doubtless the demands of the daily pro gram render the adoption of some scheme of combining and coordinating allied subjects an actual necessity. This course provides the desired core or basis for the corre lation of history, geography and literature and, in the primary grades, manual training, in a perfectly natural and interesting manner. A History of the United States for Schools (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A History of the United States for Schools The aim of the authors in writing this book has been to present what seemed to them the main historical developments in American history, the knowledge of which will enable the pupil to understand 'he social, political, and economic institutions which he finds about him in this land wherein he lives. In doing this we have tried to use simple language, to show clearly the relation of one fact to another, and to keep the story constantly moving forward. We have sought to interest not by the selection of the merely entertaining facts which are often the things of least value, but by choice of the facts that have meant something in our growth as a nation. This is first of all a text-book and not a story-book. We make no apology for the omission of many of the yarns of American his tory. If history is worth teaching at all, it is worth teaching as causal, vital, meaning history. We heartily approve of reading his tory for mere pleasure. History is, we believe, in many of its high est literary forms, most delightful and valuable mere reading, but for serious study there are certain essentials which should not be disguised or palliated by facts which are only entertaining, and not essentially significant. Niles's School History of the United States (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Niles's School History of the United States In the preparation of this volume, my aim has been to include only those events which should be known to every citizen, together with such other matter as might have a tendency to deepen impressions, to broaden the view, or add to the interest. I have tried to make all statements clear and accurate; to treat the subject in such a manner as will leave the student with an abiding thirst for wider historical reading. So far as seemed possible, in a work of this grade, the relation of cause and effect has been kept in view, and it is believed that all who carefully study these pages will see that history is made up of related events. In speaking of the measures of political parties, and other organizations, I have endeavored to lift myself above prejudice; to give plain, uncolored statements.
