Excerpt from History of Education in New Jersey, Vol. 23 Sir: I have the honor to submit herewith the twenty-third number of the series of contributions to American educational history prepared for the use of this Bureau under the general editorial supervision of Prof. Herbert B. Adams, of the Johns Hopkins University. The pres ent number deals with the State of New Jersey, and has been prepared under the immediate direction of Dr. David Murray, late superintend ent of education in Tokio, J apan. In the preparation of this work Dr. Murray has dwelt somewhat more extensively than usual upon the historical development of educa tion in that State. This seemed the more desirable in this early settled colony, where the motives for educational progress were to be sought in the characteristics of widely different primitive colonists. For the same reason it seemed desirable to include in the review the growth of elementary and public education as well as the institutions of secondary and higher education.
