History of the 45th, 1st Nottinghamshire Regiment (Sherwood Foresters) (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from History of the 45th, 1st Nottinghamshire Regiment (Sherwood Foresters) When I was asked some years later by Colonel Hume, who had succeeded to the command of the regiment, to complete the work for press, I found the task as light as it was con genial. The admirable work done by Admiral Colomb was handed over to me, and I had only to select from the material collected by him such facts as I considered essential to a true and succinct account of the doings of the regiment, and after verification to arrange them in the form in which they now appear. Book Description

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1902 edition. Excerpt: ... APPENDIX 241 Lieutenant Thomas Atkins, 73rd regiment. Clasps for Roleia, Vimiera, and Corunna. From the number of officers who received the clasp for Nive it would seem probable that the regiment, or at least some portion of it, was in action at Nive, though the name is not borne amongst the honours on the colours. APPENDIX E. Lieut.-Colonel Oliver Nicholls, who commanded the regiment from 1788 to 1795, was presented by the Corporation of Wexford with a gold medal for services rendered in 1793 to the town. On the obverse are the arms and motto of the town of Wexford. On the reverse the following inscription: --" Dedicated to Oliver Nicholls, Lieut.-Colonel of the 45th regiment, by the inhabitants of Wexford, armed to protect the peace thereof, against the insults of an armed mob which appeared before its walls, 11th July, 1793, as a testimonial of their gratitude justly due to his distinguished aid and active zeal in co-operating with them." APPENDIX F. It was a custom sometimes, before the introduction of a general distribution of war medals by the Government, for the officers of a regiment to have a medal struck, commemorative of a campaign, for distribution among the men of the regiment. There are many such medals in existence, and among others one issued by the officers of the 45th after the Peninsula campaign. It is in the form of a Maltese cross, with the numbai of the regiment in the centre, surmounting which are the names of twelve Peninsula victories. The reverse is plain. INDEX Abraham, Heights of, 9.
