Excerpt from History of the Twelfth Regiment: New Hampshire Volunteers in the War of the Rebellion In giving this history to the public. The author has the satisfaction of knowing that with all its errors and imperfections he has tried to be both truthful and impartial. He knows also, from experience, that to write what is readable is one thing, but quite another to write that which is reliable; and that when truth and justice are allowed, as they always should be, to guide and dictate, the task of the historian is difficult and laborious.
