This book examines the charismatic Christian reformation presently underway in Botswana’s time of AIDS and the moral crisis that divides the church between the elders and the young, apostolic faith healers. Richard Werbner focuses on Eloyi, an Apostolic faith-healing church in Botswana’s capital. Werbner shows how charismatic "prophets"—holy hustlers—diagnose, hustle, and shock patients during violent and destructive exorcisms. He also shows how these healers enter into prayer and meditation and take on their patients’ pain and how their ecstatic devotions create an aesthetic in which beauty beckons God. Werbner challenges theoretical assumptions about mimesis and empathy, the power of the word, and personhood. With its accompanying DVD, Holy Hustlers, Schism, and Prophecy integrates textual and filmed ethnography and provides a fresh perspective on ritual performance and the cinematic.

The entire Holy Bible rewritten as parody. The history, poetry, gospels, prophets of the Old Testament, letters of the New Testament -- the entire thing rewritten to make you laugh as it points out the lunacy, immorality and horror of the "good book". Audacious, sacrilegious, blasphemous, scandalous, but most of all hilarious, as long as you are not one who takes this book of mythology seriously. You may learn more about the Bible by reading this version than by reading the original.

The Hustler's Holy Book is the money-maker's bible. Everything a striving hustler needs to know is found within, from the definition of this way of life, to the attributes and qualities needed to acquire and discard if wishing to conquer this world of money. The book takes you back through the history of money and banking touching upon the controversies that surround these topics, before offering guidance on debt, saving, setting up a business, and economics. However, this is no ordinary book about money and finances; it has been written from a young, fresh perspective, advising its readers on how to hustle but remain conscious at the same time. The approach and style of writing of The Hustler's Holy Book will appeal to the younger reader, alluding to a revolution of people's thoughts on working in a constantly changing and competitive world. Not only is the book educational and full of knowledge, but it will leave one feeling ambitious and determined without compromising humility. This book will not provide readers with a get-rich-quick scheme like so many other books on the market, but instead, will give readers the focus to continue hustling with a greater knowledge of what this lifestyle is all about. A quote from the book says it best, "This book is a map. Its words, and the thoughts it will evoke, will lead you closer to the treasures you wish to find."

Longlisted for the National Book Award for Nonfiction “There Kevin Young goes again, giving us books we greatly need, cleverly disguised as books we merely want. Unexpectedly essential.”—Marlon James Award-winning poet and critic Kevin Young tours us through a rogue’s gallery of hoaxers, plagiarists, forgers, and fakers—from the humbug of P. T. Barnum and Edgar Allan Poe to the unrepentant bunk of JT LeRoy and Donald J. Trump. Bunk traces the history of the hoax as a peculiarly American phenomenon, examining what motivates hucksters and makes the rest of us so gullible. Disturbingly, Young finds that fakery is woven from stereotype and suspicion, race being the most insidious American hoax of all. He chronicles how Barnum came to fame by displaying figures like Joice Heth, a black woman whom he pretended was the 161-year-old nursemaid to George Washington, and What Is It?, an African American man Barnum professed was a newly discovered missing link in evolution. Bunk then turns to the hoaxing of history and the ways that forgers, plagiarists, and journalistic fakers invent backstories and falsehoods to sell us lies about themselves and about the world in our own time, from pretend Native Americans Grey Owl and Nasdijj to the deadly imposture of Clark Rockefeller, from the made-up memoirs of James Frey to the identity theft of Rachel Dolezal. In this brilliant and timely work, Young asks what it means to live in a post-factual world of “truthiness” where everything is up for interpretation and everyone is subject to a pervasive cynicism that damages our ideas of reality, fact, and art.

In the 1990s, Los Angeles was home to numerous radical social and environmental eruptions. In the face of several major earthquakes and floods, riots and economic insecurity, police brutality and mass incarceration, some young black Angelenos turned to holy hip hop—a movement merging Christianity and hip hop culture—to “save” themselves and the city. Converting street corners to open-air churches and gangsta rap beats into anthems of praise, holy hip hoppers used gospel rap to navigate complicated social and spiritual realities and to transform the Southland’s fractured terrains into musical Zions. Armed with beats, rhymes, and bibles, they journeyed through black Lutheran congregations, prison ministries, African churches, reggae dancehalls, hip hop clubs, Nation of Islam meetings, and Black Lives Matter marches. Zanfagna’s fascinating ethnography provides a contemporary and unique view of black LA, offering a much-needed perspective on how music and religion intertwine in people's everyday experiences.
