How to Be Successful Through the Teenage Years

Book Description

As a parent, we all want to see our children succeed in life. We want to see them grow up and be productive individuals in this world. It is our duty to make every conscious effort that we possibly can to train and develop them to the best of our ability. As children grow up into teenagers, the task of training our children get a little more difficult. The teenagers become more withdrawn and not as open as they once were. This makes it difficult on both the parents and teenagers. The author, Cornelius JaJuan Clark, is a well-known administrator in Jackson County. Clark was a graduate of Graceville High School and attended Chipola College where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education in 2010. In 2013, Clark received his Master's Degree from the University of West Florida in Educational Leadership and his Specialist Degree from Capella University in Curriculum and Instruction in 2015. Clark was the Head Track Coach at his 6th-12th grade high school for 10 years and taught for 6 years before accepting his role in administration. During his time at the school, he has had the opportunity to found a gentlemen's program in which he mentors young men on the principles of becoming a true man. Clark was also the middle school FCA sponsor for his school. Among these responsibilities, Clark is also a Youth Minister in which he has the opportunity to mentor and instruct youth in experiencing success in their life. In Clark's career as an educator and youth minister, he constantly encounters many teenagers who desire to do well in life, but often lack the knowledge needed in order to overcome many problems that they are faced with. When asked if they have spoken with their parents about the issues, majority acknowledge that they have not as a result of not knowing how. With this in mind, because the teenagers have not spoken with their parents, they have not had the opportunity to receive sound instruction on how to overcome or cope with the situation go

How Children Succeed

Book Description

Why do some children succeed while others fail? The story we usually tell about childhood and success is the one about intelligence: success comes to those who score highest on tests, from preschool admissions to SATs. But in How Children Succeed, Paul Tough argues that the qualities that matter most have more to do with character: skills like perseverance, curiosity, conscientiousness, optimism, and self-control. How Children Succeed introduces us to a new generation of researchers and educators who, for the first time, are using the tools of science to peel back the mysteries of character. Through their stories—and the stories of the children they are trying to help—Tough traces the links between childhood stress and life success. He uncovers the surprising ways in which parents do—and do not—prepare their children for adulthood. And he provides us with new insights into how to improve the lives of children growing up in poverty. Early adversity, scientists have come to understand, not only affects the conditions of children’s lives, it can also alter the physical development of their brains. But innovative thinkers around the country are now using this knowledge to help children overcome the constraints of poverty. With the right support, as Tough’s extraordinary reporting makes clear, children who grow up in the most painful circumstances can go on to achieve amazing things. This provocative and profoundly hopeful book has the potential to change how we raise our children, how we run our schools, and how we construct our social safety net. It will not only inspire and engage readers, it will also change our understanding of childhood itself.

That’s why the work of Challenge Success is so urgent. It has created a model for creating change in our schools that is based on research and solid foundational principles like communication, creativity, and compassion. Citing evidence-based ‘best practices’ gleaned from years of work with schools across the country, they show us what is not working, but more importantly, what we need to do to fix things. Filled with practical suggestions and exercises that can be implemented easily, as well as advice on how to approach long-term change, Overloaded and Underprepared is a clear and compelling roadmap for teachers, school administrators and parents who believe that we owe our children a better education.” —Madeline Levine, co-founder Challenge Success; author of The Price of Privilege and Teach Your Children Well “This new book from the leaders behind Challenge Success provides a thorough and balanced exploration of the structural challenges facing students, parents, educators, and administrators in our primary and secondary schools today. The authors’ unique approach of sharing proven strategies that enable students to thrive, while recognizing that the most effective solutions are tailored on a school-by-school basis, makes for a valuable handbook for anyone seeking to better understand the many complex dimensions at work in a successful learning environment.” —John J. DeGioia, President of Georgetown University
