This book presents the main hydrological methods and techniques used in the design and operation of hydraulic projects and the management of water resources and associated natural risks. It covers the key topics of water resources engineering, from the estimation of runoff volumes and unit hydrographs to the routing of flows along a river and through lakes, reservoirs, and hydraulic structures. It deals with questions regarding basic hydrological data, hydrological modeling and the prediction and forecasting of low flows and flood discharges.

This lucidly-written book, with its diagrammatic representation and practical examples, presents a comprehensive treatment of the fundamentals of engineering hydrology in the areas of elements of hydrological cycle, abstraction losses, streamflow measurement, runoff, hydrology statistics, flood frequency analysis and groundwater flow. Throughout the book, the text emphasises problem-solving in which students are encouraged to apply their conceptual understanding in order to solve practical problems. This book is primarily intended for the undergraduate students of civil engineering and agricultural engineering.

This report provides a case study from the province of Esfahan, in central Iran, describing the struggle of a village to secure the water resources without which local agriculture, and altogether life in the village, would be impossible. It illustrates the endless ingenuity of farmers in their quest for water, how land and water rights have developed, how various legal repertoires may conflict with one another, and how the intervention of the state transformed the wider hydrological cycle of the valley and affected the delicate equilibrium between population and resources that had prevailed until then. The report estimates the costs of accessing one cubic meter from each of these different sources and shows how political interventions or drought mitigation policies elicit solutions that are extremely costly.
