The IFIP TC-6 9th International Conference on Personal Wireless Communi- tions, PWC 2004 is the main conference of the IFIP Working Group 6. 8, Mobile and Wireless Communications. The ?eld of personal wireless communications is steadily growing in imp- tance,fromanacademic,industrialandsocietalpointofview. Thedroppingcost of WLAN and short-range technologies such as Bluetooth and Zigbee is causing the proliferation of personal devices and appliances equipped with radio int- faces. Together with the gradual deployment of powerful wireless infrastructure networks, such as 3G cellular systems and WLAN hotspots, the conditions are being created for a?ordable ubiquitous communication involving virtually any artifact. This enables new application areas such as ambient intelligence where a world of devices, sensors and actuators surrounding us use wireless technology to create systems that assist us in an unobtrusive way. It also allows the - velopment of personal and personalized environments that accompany a person whereverheorshegoes. ExamplesarePersonalAreaNetworks(PAN)physically surrounding a person, and personal networks with a potentially global reach. PWC 2004 re?ects these developments, which are happening on a global scale. Researchers from all over the world, and in particular a large number from Asia, made contributions to the conference. There were 100 submissions. After a thorough reviewing process, 25 full papers and 13 short papers were retained for presentation in the technical sessions. The papers cover the whole range of wireless and mobile technologies: cellular systems, WLAN, ad hoc and sensor networks, host and network mobility, transport protocols for wireless systems, and the physical layer.

Emerging Personal Wireless Communications


Book Description

The growth of telecommunications has been largely based on mobile and data services in the past 10 years and the growth will continue. For instance, it is forecasted that after 2005 the mobile traffic turnover in Europe will exceed that of fixed telephone traffic and the penetration of Internet access through mobile will exceed that of fixed access. It is expected that the new value added services will be Internet-based and the IP traffic will outweigh the amount of traditional ISDN based telephone traffic. The transition from the existing telecommunications services to mobile and Internet based ones will change the service infrastructure as well as the customer and service management structures. In wireless communications there are several new standards being developed and implemented to improve the data transmission rate over radio channels, to combine both voice, packet data and multimedia services in the terminals and to improve the service quality and usability. Narrow band packet radio standards such as General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and i-Mode are already operative and broadband IMT-2000 standards, also called as Third Generation (3G) Mobile, have been developed in Japan, Europe and US. At the same time Wireless LAN and Bluetooth technologies mature and provide short-range data access to terminal devices. The emerging new technologies create opportunities not only to incumbent teleoperators but also to new network operators, IT companies and new service and content providers.

There are numerous factors contributing to the dynamic growth of wireless communication systems we've been observing in the past 10 years, the most important being the increasing network user mobility and the technological advances in high-speed data transmission over radio channels. Research centres and standards-making institutions the world over conduct works on 3G integrated systems of person-to-person and person-to-computer communications, wireless counterparts of classical LAN, ATM and IP architectures, satellite and access networks as well as advanced service platforms like W AP and other concepts. Among the many commercial and non-profit organisations professionally involved in the development of the new information infrastructure, of particular influence is the International Federation for Information Processing. Within its Technical Committee TC-6, a working group WG 6.8 has been set up to co-ordinate IFIP activities in the area of wireless communications. It has done so, among others, by arranging regular meetings of academic and industrial researchers, known as IFIP TC-6 WG 6.8 Workshops on Personal Wireless Communications (pWC). Such workshops were held in recent years in Prague, Frankfurt/M, Tokyo and Copenhagen, and their success has resulted in the promotion of PWC to the status of IFIP Working Conference.
