Digital Imaging targets anyone with an interest in digital imaging, professional or private, who uses even quite modest equipment such as a PC, digital camera and scanner, a graphics editor such as PAINT, and an inkjet printer. Uniquely, it is intended to fill the gap between the highly technical texts for academics (with access to expensive equipment), and the superficial introductions for amateurs. The four-part treatment spans theory, technology, programs and practice. Theory covers integer arithmetic, additive and subtractive color, greyscales, computational geometry, and a new presentation of discrete Fourier analysis; Technology considers bitmap file structures, scanners, digital cameras, graphic editors, and inkjet printers; Programs develops several processing tools for use in conjunction with a standard Paint graphics editor and supplementary processing tools; Practice discusses 1-bit, greyscale, 4-bit, 8-bit, and 24-bit images for the practice section. Relevant QBASIC code is supplied an accompanying CD and algorithms are listed in the appendix. Readers can attain a level of understanding and the practical insights to obtain optimal use and satisfaction from even the most basic digital-imaging equipment.

Hands-on resource to understand and successfully process biological image data In Imaging Life: Image Acquisition and Analysis in Biology and Medicine, distinguished biologist Dr. Lawrence R. Griffing delivers a comprehensive and accessible exploration of scientific imaging, including but not limited to the different scientific imaging technologies, image processing, and analysis. The author discusses technical features, challenges, and solutions of the various imaging modalities to obtain the best possible image. Divided into three sections, the book opens with the basics such as the various image media, their representation and evaluation. It explains in exceptional detail pre- and postprocessing of an image. The last section concludes with common microscopic and biomedical imaging modalities in light of technical limitations and solutions to achieve the best possible image acquisition of the specimen. Imaging Life: Image Acquisition and Analysis in Biology and Medicine is written specifically for readers with limited mathematical and programming backgrounds and includes tutorials on image processing in relevant chapters. It also contains exercises in the use of popular, open-source software. A thorough introduction to imaging methods, technical features, challenges, and solutions to successfully capture biological images Offers tutorials on image processing using open-source software in relevant chapter Discusses details of acquisition needs and image media covering pixels, pixel values, contrast, tonal range, and image formats In-depth presentation of microscopic and biomedical imaging modalities Perfect for professionals and students in the biological sciences and engineering, Imaging Life: Image Acquisition and Analysis in Biology and Medicine is an ideal resource for research labs, biotech companies, and equipment vendors.

Public policy is a broad and interdisciplinary area of study and research in the field tends to reflect this. Yet for those teaching and studying public policy, the disjointed nature of the field can be confusing and cumbersome. This text provides a consistent and coherent framework for uniting the field of public policy. Authors Kevin B. Smith and Christopher W. Larimer offer an organized and comprehensive overview of the core questions and concepts, major theoretical frameworks, primary methodological approaches, and key controversies and debates in each subfield of policy studies from the policy process and policy analysis to program evaluation and policy implementation. The third edition has been updated throughout to include the latest scholarship and approaches in the field, including new and expanded coverage of behavioral economics, the narrative policy framework, Fourth Generation implementation studies, the policy regime approach, field experiments, and the debate of program versus policy implementation studies. Now with an appendix of sample comprehensive exam questions, The Public Policy Theory Primer remains an indispensable text for the systematic study of public policy.

In the areas of image processing and computer vision, there is a particular need for software that can, given an unfocused or motion-blurred image, infer the three-dimensional shape of a scene. This book describes the analytical processes that go into designing such software, delineates the options open to programmers, and presents original algorithms. Written for readers with interests in image processing and computer vision and with backgrounds in engineering, science or mathematics, this highly practical text/reference is accessible to advanced students or those with a degree that includes basic linear algebra and calculus courses.

The FRCR Part 2B is a demanding examination consisting of an oral examination, a rapid reporting session and a reporting session (also known as the 'long cases'). Preparation can prove very stressful - the multiple parts of the examination rely on different and distinct techniques. This succinct examination guide and DVD contain over 4700 radiological images allowing for many more opportunities, using the print-off examination format sheet and digital images, to recreate examination conditions. Model sample answers are provided for each question to aid in self-marking and revision. With a complete introduction to the examination including the marking scheme and top tips for success, candidates will welcome the chance to practise papers and check their examination technique in this unique guide. 'This examination is the culmination of years of hard work and training, and the RCR rightly makes it a difficult and robust examination to challenge trainees and ensure they have reached an appropriate standard. Preparation is absolutely vital for success.' Jennifer Davidson, Beth Shepherd and Sunderarajan Jayaraman, in the Introduction

Since time immemorial, vision in general and images in particular have played an important and essential role in human life. Nowadays, the field of image processing also has numerous scientific, commercial, industrial and military applications. All these applications result from the interaction between fun damental scientific research on the one hand, and the development of new and high-standard technology on the other hand. Regarding the scientific com ponent, quite recently the scientific community became familiar with "fuzzy techniques" in image processing, which make use of the framework of fuzzy sets and related theories. The theory of fuzzy sets was initiated in 1965 by Zadeh, and is one of the most developed models to treat imprecision and uncertainty. Instead of the classical approach that an object belongs or does not belong to a set, the concept of a fuzzy set allows a gradual transition from membership to nonmembership, providing partial degrees of member ship. Fuzzy techniques are often complementary to existing techniques and can contribute to the development of better and more robust methods, as has already been illustrated in numerous scientific branches. With this vol ume, we want to demonstrate that the introduction and application of fuzzy techniques can also be very successful in the area of image processing. This book contains high-quality contributions of over 30 field experts, covering a wide range of both theoretical and practical applications of fuzzy techniques in image processing.

This reference work provides a comprehensive and modern approach to the imaging of numerous non-traumatic and traumatic emergency conditions affecting the human body. It reviews the latest imaging techniques, related clinical literature, and appropriateness criteria/guidelines, while also discussing current controversies in the imaging of acutely ill patients. The first chapters outline an evidence-based approach to imaging interpretation for patients with acute non-traumatic and traumatic conditions, explain the role of Artificial Intelligence in emergency radiology, and offer guidance on when to consult an interventional radiologist in vascular as well as non-vascular emergencies. The next chapters describe specific applications of Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, radiography, Multi-Detector Computed Tomography (MDCT), and Dual-Energy Computed Tomography for the imaging of common and less common acute brain, spine, thoracic, abdominal, pelvic and musculoskeletal conditions, including the unique challenges of imaging pregnant, bariatric and pediatric patients. Written by a group of leading North American and European Emergency and Trauma Radiology experts, this book will be of value to emergency and general radiologists, to emergency department physicians and related personnel, to obstetricians and gynecologists, to general and trauma surgeons, as well as trainees in all of these specialties.
