Excerpt from Journal of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States, 1903, Vol. 12 These experiences, with some variations, were repeated on the reembarkation of the 5th Army Corps after the surrender Of the city of Santiago de Cuba. The condition of the victorious troops on landing at Montauk, at the close Of the campaign, is too well known to need comment. The necessity for improved methods Of over sea transport for troops and war material had, among other things, become obvious. In the meantime similar difficulties had been encountered in the movement Of the first expedition to the Philippines. On the Pacific coast, as on the Atlantic seaboard, it became evident that suitable vessels for the transport of an increasing army rendered necessary by the in surrection of the Filipinos, could hardly be Obtained. The occu pation Of Cuba and Porto Rico also demanded a continuous ocean service which commercial lines were unable to furnish in a satis factory manner.
