As the oldest folk theatrical art, Karyala boasts captivating uniqueness. Its extraordinary essence emerges from the absence of rehearsals or pre-written scripts, as each act unfolds live before the audience's eyes. The author has emphasized the role of Karyala as a theatre art form which plays a powerful role in rural communication within Himachal Pradesh. However, as societal changes sweep through people's lives, Karyala has also experienced the wind of change. Preserving this treasured folk theatre is imperative, ensuring that future generations embrace and appreciate our cultural heritage.

"The Himalayas are a source of inspiration and challenge to the researchers, intellectuals and adventurers. The lofty mountains with snow-clad peaks and lush green forests fascinate one and all. This work on the art and culture of people of the Himalayan region is fourth in sequence by the author. After Folk Art of Duggar; Ripples in the Himalayas; and Rajat Shikhron Ke Rupehle Swar, this work completes the first phase of studies of Himalayan culture. Earlier Kumaon, Garhwal, Kashmir and Ladakh Himalayas and their ranges were covered in detail. With the inclusion of Dhauladhar ranges and nearby surroundings of Kangra, Palampur, Baijnath, Mandi, Kullu, Manali, Lahaul & Spiti, Kinnaur and upper regions of Shimla in this book, it completes the studies of western Himalayas. The author has visited himself in most of these areas and collected the data so that first hand information can be provided to the readers. In a way it is a first endeavour in this field wherein the people and the land are discussed collectively for the first time. However, individual tribes of Himachal Pradesh do find their place in sociological studies done in the field, but we do not find a comparative study for which an objective effort has been made in this book for the benefit of readers and art historians alike. The book covers the art, architecture and cultural aspects of Himachal Pradesh. References have also been made to Basohli, Jammu, Manket, etc. as the Pahari art of minature paintings had its own legacy in these erstwhile kingdoms." -- Cover description.

This book examines folk theatres of North India as a unique performative structure, a counter stream to the postulations of Sanskrit and Western realistic theatre. In focusing on their historical, social and cultural imprints, it explores how these theatres challenge the linearity of cultural history and subvert cultural hegemony. The book looks at diverse forms of theatre such as svangs, nautanki, tamasha, all with conventions like open performative space, free mingling of spectators and actors, flexibility in roles and genres, etc. It discusses the genesis, history and the independent trajectory of folk theatres; folk theatre and Sanskrit dramaturgy; cinematic legacy; and theatrical space as performance besides investigating causes, inter-relations within socio-cultural factors, and the performance principles underlying them. It shows how these theatres effectively contest delimitation of human creative impulses (as revealed in classical Sanskrit theatre) from structuring as also of normative impulses of religion and culture, while amalgamating influences from Western theatre, newly-rising religious reform movements of 19th century India, tantra and Bhakti. It further highlights their ability to adapt and reinvent themselves in accordance with spatial and temporal transformations to constitute an important anthropological layer of Indian society. Comprehensive and empirically rich, this book will be an essential read for scholars and researchers of cultural studies, theatre, film and performance studies, sociology, political studies, popular culture, and South Asian studies.
