LITTLE MR. THIMBLEFINGER AND HIS QUEER COUNTRY - 19 enthralling children's stories

Book Description

LITTLE MR. THIMBLEFINGER AND HIS QUEER COUNTRY was written by Joel Chandler Harris, author of the Uncle Remus and Brer Rabbit stories. This book contains 19 adventures. It also has 34 pen and ink drawings by Oliver Herford which give the stories added life. NOTE: Here the word “queer” in fact means STRANGE and has been used in its original, literal form and does not have the implication of any modern connotation. Here we have the first full adventure by Mr Thimblefinger as he leads his friends – Mr. Rabbit, tortoise, Mr Lion, Sweet Susan, Brother Bear and others, through his strange land. A second book of adventures by Mr Thimblefinger and friends titled “Mr Rabbit at Home” followed (copy ISBN 9788834171943 into your browser to search for this book). And strange they are. Herein we have stories like: Mr. Thimblefinger’s Queer Country Mr. Thimblefinger’s Friends The Talking-Saddle and the Thief The Ladder of Lions The Looking-Glass Children Mr. Rabbit as a Rain-Maker How Brother Bear’s Hair was combed The Strawberry-Girl The Witch of the Well, and many more. The stories themselves belong to three categories. Some of them were gathered from the negroes of the South, but were not embodied in the tales of Uncle Remus, because the author was not sure they were indeed negro stories; some are folklore stories from Middle Georgia, and no doubt belong to England; and some are merely inventions. They were all written in the midst of daily work while the author was working on a morning newspaper. ============== KEYWORDS/TAGS: Mr Thimblefinger, strange country, strange land, Folklore, fairy tales, myths, legends, childrens stories, bedtime stories, fables, parents with children, classic childrens stories, classic fairy tales, parents to be, fathers with children, mothers with children, babies, childrens books, Magical, delightful, enthralling, Thimblefinger, Rabbit, Brother, Sweetest Susan, Meadows, Lion, Drusilla, John, Buster, children, Valentine, Mayor, Tip-Top, talking saddle, Crow, River, thief, Bear, Chickamy Crany, Mr Lion, laughter, Dolls, Terrapin, tortoise,, honor, honour, morals, beautiful, Granny, Strawberry Girl, peaches and cream, looking-glass, queer, woods, Stag, Billy-Goat, traveller, traveller, Buzzard, Conjurer, gwine, companion, Keen-Point, Grim-Eye, cave, Tickle-My-Toes, witch, Butch, strange looking, Cob Handle, Geraldine, fiddle, violin,, comb, Cat, strawberries, astonished, pomegranate tree, blood-cousins, fiddle string, pumpkins, coachman

QUEEN OF THE PIRATE ISLE - A Children's Adventure Story

Book Description

This is a quintessential children’s make-up-adventure story and is delightful in its telling. The 28 color images are exquisitely crafted and reflect and add to the essence of the story. Our story is set in the San Francisco area during the Gold Rush era of the late 1840’s and early 1850’s. The Queen of the Pirate Isle is about an imaginative young girl named Polly, who, with her cousin Hickory, a small Chinese boy named Wan Lee, and a neighbour named Patsey, who, after a game of pirates in the house, decide to “run away” to become real pirates. On their way they pass through the mining area where they slip and fall down a steep mud-slide. Polly’s doll’s removable hair got caught on something and ripped off during the fall and is now bald. They end up falling asleep in a nearby mine and are awoken and brought home by the miners, who have dressed up as pirates as a thank-you to Polly and the children as the mine in which they fell asleep led the miners to a new seam of gold.

THE NEW-YEAR'S BARGAIN - A Children's Fantasy Story (Illustrated)

Book Description

The “New Year’s Bargain” by Susan Coolidge is a lovely children's story with charming illustrations throughout by Addie Ledyard, first published in 1871 and again in 1884. The story takes place in the Black Forest in Germany where two little children, Max and Thekla, come across Time creating the months of the year out of small moments. Max is unable to resist taking some moments for himself, and when the months come to demand their time back, he bargains with them to tell he and Thekla a story each month and to bring them a present. The stories have a mythical aura while still maintaining a Victorian sensibility about women's roles and dead children. Even so, it is still a fascinating read. To be read to children by adults and scholars of children's literature should definitely take a look. The 13 chapters of this book are: I. The Bargain with the Months. II. The Bear Story. III. Little Tot. IV. “Maria”. V. May’s Garden. VI. The Little Housekeepers. VII. The Last of the Fairies. VIII. The Story of a Little Spark. IX. The Desert Island. X. Nippie Nutcracker. XI. “Chusey”. XII. How the Cat kept Christmas. THE WATER BABIES - A Children's Classic

Book Description

The Water-Babies, A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby is a children's novel by Charles Kingsley between 1862–63. It is written as part satire, satirising the events of the period. The book’s protagonist is Tom, a young chimney sweep, who falls into a river after encountering an upper-class girl named Ellie and being chased out of her house. There he appears to drown and is transformed into a "water-baby", as he is told by a caddisfly—an insect that sheds its skin—and begins his moral education. Tom embarks on a series of adventures and lessons, and enjoys the community of other water-babies on Saint Brendan's Island once he proves himself a moral creature. The major spiritual leaders in his new world are the fairies Mrs. Doasyouwouldbedoneby (a reference to the Golden Rule), Mrs. Bedonebyasyoudid, and Mother Carey. Weekly, Tom is allowed the company of Ellie, who eventually becomes a water-baby as well. Grimes, his old master, drowns as well, and in his final adventure, Tom travels to the end of the world to attempt to help the man where he is being punished for his misdeeds. Tom helps Grimes to find repentance, and Grimes will be given a second chance if he can successfully perform a final penance. By proving his willingness to do things he does not like, if they are the right things to do, Tom earns himself a return to human form, and becomes "a great man of science" who "can plan railways, design steam-engines, electric telegraphs, rifled guns, and so forth". He and Ellie are united, although the book states (perhaps jokingly) that they never marry, claiming that in fairy tales, no one beneath the rank of prince and princess ever marries. The book ends with the caveat that it is only a fairy tale, and the reader is to believe none of it, "even if it is true." Initially published in serial form Macmillan's Magazine, it was first published in its entirety in 1863. The story is thematically concerned with Christian redemption, though Kingsley also uses the book to argue that England treats its poor badly, and to question child labour, among other themes. ================ KEYWORDS/TAGS: Water Babies, fairy tale, land babies, childrens novel, childrens stories, Charles kingsley, satire, magical, enchanting, adventure, underwater, under sea, dragonfly, Land Babies, Water-Babies, Down To The Sea, Fairies, Tom, St. Brandans Isle, Leap Frog, Jump, Little White Lady, Give Chase, Lizards, Bathe, Old Dame, Cool, Clear Water, Pterodactyles, Cramchild, Queen, Learn, Old Salmon, Wicked, Old Otter, Coasting, Point Of Rock, Champagne, Swam, Buoy, Terns, Lazy Sunfish, Distinguished, Lobster, Professor, Ptthmllnsprts, Wise Man, Leap Frog, Town Clerk, White Sand, Inshore, Fishes, Nursery Maid, Nasty Old Monk, Ellie, Surprise, Warm Springs, Light Summer, Flapdoodle Tree, Eft, Pond, Beasts of the Sea, Grand Old Lady, Quakeress, Good Crow, Water Dog, Jellyfish, Mackerel, Epimetheus, Pandora, Old Mother Shipton, Great Sea serpent, Philosophers, Gotham, Spectacles, Poor Turnip Sun, Mr. Grimes, Bandage, Black Cedars, folklore, fantasy, waterfall, Caddisfly. education, Mrs. Doasyouwouldbedoneby, Golden Rule, Mrs. Bedonebyasyoudid, Mother Carey,

Book Description

The King of Zum passes away and the Crown Prince and his wife, the Princess can’t be found anywhere in the kingdom? Is there something sinister afoot, or have they run away? The people of Zum didn’t know what to do and many were seen walking through the streets wringing their hands and behaving most strangely, for you see, Zum had never not had a monarch. After the sun has gone and the Gaslighter had done his rounds and lit all the streetlights, boy was taken to a waiting carriage. Through the eerily lit streets the horses clipped and clopped towards Kings Cross station. Very soon he was ensconced in a plush leather window seat and the train was steaming its way through North London, through the suburbs and into the moonlit country side….. He awoke in an unfamiliar room and was told they were in Scarborough. Boy spent the day on the beach making sandcastles and even laughed at the play staged by the Pierrot Theatre company. At the end of the day, thoroughly tired out, he went to bed right after dinner and was gazing through the window when the moon started moving closer and closer. When it was close enough he could see Pierrot from the Theatre Company sitting astride the yellowy-golden orb. “I have an invitation for you,” Pierrot said to Boy. “For me!?” said an incredulous Boy? “Yes for you. Now come on, hop on,” said Pierrot holding out a hand “we don’t want to be late. Taking Pierrot’s hand Boy stepped from the window sill onto the moon. And so began Boy’s moonlit adventures with Pierrot to the land of Zum....... Will Boy be the one who finds the lost Prince and Princess? Just where could they be? What adventures will Boy have and where are they going to stay? Afterall the moon disappears at the end of each day?
