Excerpt from Localization: By X Rays and Stereoscopy It is nearly twenty years since the author first described, in the medical press, the system of exact localization by means of X rays which is mainly the theme of this volume. The present appalling war, with its enormous number of casualties, made it seem likely that a more detailed description of the method in book form would be of some service to those engaged in X-ray work among the wounded. No attempt has been made in these pages to cover the vast ground of X-ray work in general; the aim has been merely to bring together a number of practical points connected with the author's personal work. The system he advocates has stood the test of time, but it has also shown itself adaptable to the more rapid procedure which is demanded, and the simplifications which have been introduced into the original method will be found fully described in the body of this book. The author would direct special attention to the final chapter, which deals with the precise localization of foreign bodies in eyeball and orbit, for he trusts that this application of X rays may be extended. As every ophthalmic surgeon knows, foreign bodies in the eyeball and orbit are ever with us. At present, owing to hand-grenade warfare, such cases are occurring in very large numbers, but in civil life, especially in engineering workshops and various industrial concerns, these cases are constantly met with; and very often it happens that the eye can be saved if - but only if - the exact position of the foreign body is known, so that it may be extracted without difficulty. This book expands the art historical perspective on art’s connection to anatomy and medicine, bringing together in one text several case studies from various methodological perspectives. The contributors focus on the common visual and bodily nature of (figural) art, anatomy, and medicine around the central concept of modeling (posing, exemplifying and fabricating). Topics covered include the role of anatomical study in artistic training, the importance of art and visual literacy in anatomical/medical training and in the dissemination (via models) of medical knowledge/information, and artistic representations of the medical body in the contexts of public health and propaganda.
