MANAGING CRISES

Book Description

In this book, the editors, with 25 notable contributors, expand the knowledge of crisis management, focusing on case studies of high-profile events that have occurred in recent history. Part One of the text aims at theoretical development through empirical case studies and also postulates a crisis typology and charts specific theoretical and administrative challenges. The 'case bank,' which comprises the bulk of the book, is presented in four additional sections. The first deals with the development of crises and compares the infamous Watts riots with the 1992 L.A. riots. It also analyzes the fragmented and complex international environment that allowed the 'safe area' in Bosnia to be overrun by Bosnian Serbs in 1995. The final chapter chronicles the incredible human costs of mismanaged crisis in the Rwanda massacres in 1994. The second section explores the many decisional dilemmas that confront crisis managers. Cases include the fire at the Piper Alpha oil rig; the 1999 Turkish earthquakes; the Eindhoven, Holland plane crash; and crisis management of the Mad Cow epidemic disease in the U.K. The third section explores the long-term dimensions of crises and crisis management and particularly the development of national traumas such as the assassination of Sweden's Prime Minister Olaf Palme in 1986, the 1992 Amsterdam air crash, and the TWA flight 800 disaster in 1996. The final section shifts focus to future scenarios such as speculative information technology disasters, potentially devastating viral epidemics, deteriorating environmental and societal conditions in Russia, the southwest U.S. coming water shortage, and the outlook for Japan, one of the worldÂ’s most disaster-prone countries. Summarizing the research findings of the past decade, the authors describe patterns in the paths toward crises, the dilemmas and coping mechanisms that emerge during the thick of crisis, and, very importantly, the pathways that lead away from crisis.

How Can I Fix It?

Book Description

With this highly accessible and unique little guide, Larry Cuban offers educators indispensable tools to make sense of the daily complexities they encounter in their work. Teachers face dozens of classroom situations where conflicts occur. Similarly, principals wrestle with school issues that call for changes in attitudes, behaviours, and procedures. Because the process is so familiar, even expert teachers and principals often have difficulty in explaining what it is that they do and how they go about solving problems and coping with dilemmas in their classrooms and schools. Using concrete and varied examples drawn from the workplace, Cuban presents vivid and provocative case studies of practitioners’ experiences in urban and suburban schools that deal with the routine conflicts of school. He draws on his own extensive experience in public schools and his research into teaching and administration to set forth a practical framework for identifying, defining, and coping with both puzzling problems and tension-filled dilemmas. A much-needed resource for both new and experienced practitioners, How Can I Fix It? focuses on common skills that practitioners have, but seldom take time to consider, and applies these skills to concrete situations.

Managing the Organizational Melting Pot

Book Description

Illuminating the troublesome and disturbing aspects of workplace diversity that tend to be glossed over in most management literature, Managing the Organizational Melting Pot covers key issues such as: individual and institutional resistance, the effectiveness of diversity change efforts, and the less visible ways in which exclusion and discrimination continue to be practiced in the workplace. To assist the reader in understanding some of these dilemmas, the contributors to this collection adopt an array of theoretical frameworks - that are all striking departures from traditional and more functional perspectives on diversity - including intergroup relations theory, critical theory, Jungian psychology, feminism, post-colonial theory, cultural history, postmodernism, realism, institutional theory, and class analysis.

It gives you a front row seat to observe, react to, and, therefore more clearly comprehend and successfully apply proven Grid solutions. You almost become a cast member in this 'management drama' as the employees of the company Celarmco interact with their colleagues, subordinates, and bosses. You witness the delicate dynamics of managerial and personal behavior as these characters project and respond to Grid styles that reflect various degrees of concern for performance and people. But make no mistake. This completely new version contains the same descriptions, definitions and explanations of the Grid framework that is improving human relations and increasing productivity in 37 corporations worldwide. Still covered are the major approaches for managing work and people (9,1; 1,9; 9,9; etc); solving conflict; handling organizational change; and developing strong leadership.
