Mars and Its Mystery

Book Description

"Mars and Its Mystery" by Edward Sylvester Morse Edward Sylvester Morse was an American zoologist, archaeologist, and orientalist. However, he was also fascinated by the galaxies and the parents. Written just after the turn of the century, this book aimed to reveal some of the time's common misconceptions about Mars. However, the book also delves into other astronomical topics such as the chances of other inhabited planets and how space can be measured at such great distances.

Is Mars Habitable?

Book Description

The special point to which I here wish to call attention is this. Mr. Lowell's main contention is, that the surface of Mars is wonderfully smooth and level. Not only are there no mountains, but there are no hills or valleys or plateaux. This assumption is absolutely essential to support the other great assumption, that the wonderful network of perfectly straight lines over nearly the whole surface of the planet are irrigation canals. It is not alleged that irregularities or undulations of a few hundreds or even one or two thousands of feet could possibly be detected, while certainly all we know of planetary formation or structure point strongly towards some inequalities of surface.

Geographies of Mars

Book Description

This volume "explores the origins of our Martian obsession in the late nineteenth century" and examines "the way turn-of-the-century Americans and Europeans thought about space, knowledge, and power." The author paints a picture of how "scientists and the public saw [Mars] around the beginning of the 20th century, when canals on the Red Planet seemed a very real possibility." It is a story of mountain observatories, of fieldwork conducted at a distance, and of how Mars's geographers sought social and scientific legitimacy, exploring how astronomy and geography intersected in the debates over the existence of life on Mars.
