Money Thief

Book Description

Money Thief traces my path from the age of twelve to sixty-five, through numerous prison terms, heroin addictions, several marriages, and finally, to redemption. Each chapter, or mini-story, chronicles some significant event in my life. While each event did in fact occur, their chronological sequences may not be one-hundred percent accurate. Over the passage of time, coupled with vast amounts of drugs consumed, my recollection of times and places may have been somewhat eroded, By writing this story, I hope to illuminate the fact that no matter how far afield one may wander, redemption is not only possible, with diligence of purpose and focus, it is attainable. The life I led, although influenced by various factors beyond my control, was the product of my bad choices; just as my choice of redemption was the result of my own decisions and actions. My frivolous pursuit to discover and understand the enigmatic world around me has led me on a destructive path of heartache and misery; and broken dreams that seemed beyond repair. Yet, with diligence, hard work, and a constantly evolving mind-set, I have met the awesome challenge of rehabilitation, and have firmly grasped the reins of recovery from the diabolical hands of crime, prison, and drug addiction. -James E. The Professional Thief

Book Description

This monograph by a professional thief—with the aid of Edwin H. Sutherland's expert comments and analyses—is a revealing sociological document that goes far to explain the genesis, development, and patterns of criminal behavior. "Chic Conwell," as the author was known in the underworld, gives a candid and forthright account of the highly organized society in which the professional thief lives. He tells how he learned to steal, survive, succeed, and ultimately to pay his debt to society and prepare himself for full and useful citizenship. The Professional Thief presents in amazing detail the hard, cold facts about the private lives and professional habits of pickpockets, shoplifters, and conmen, and brings into focus the essential psychological and sociological situations that beget and support professional crime.

Black Money and Tax Havens

Book Description

Just how much black money is there in India? Estimates vary from 10 per cent to 20 per cent of our GDP. Conservatively, Rs 15 lakh crore (10 per cent of Rs 150 lakh crore, our GDP in 2016-17). As for Indian money in tax havens around the world? Around Rs 65 lakh crore. Truly astounding figures. Black money or kala dhan is a topic that has elicited much debate in recent times. This has been mostly marked by mudslinging and name-calling, and the discussions that have ensued often have no basis in fact. While most people have a hazy notion of black money, only a few understand it in its entirety. The issue of tax havens is perhaps even more misunderstood. Most people fail to see the connection between tax havens and black money. Black Money and Tax Havens is the first work that discusses both of these issues in depth and offers a 360-degree view to the reader. In this work, R. Vaidyanathan provides the reader with a brief overview of black money-its generation, its estimates and how and why it is spirited away to tax havens. He also lays bare the danger that is posed to world financial well-being on account of the lack of political will to tackle these issues. A unique and timely work, this book packs in much information in an accessible manner.
