More Than Survivors

Book Description

Dr. Richard Baggett heard disconsolate believers expressing despair and frustration about their failures when comparing themselves to Biblical characters. As the author continued to peruse the Scriptures, he discovered a startling truth: the heroes of the Bible were, in truth, ordinary people, mired in crises, who met the Living God and changed dramatically, becoming More Than Survivors! These saints who became legends were ordinary people, who had in-law problems, committed vile sins, had doubts, expressed frustration, and raged at the Lord at times, cheated their siblings, cursed the day that they were born, murdered Christians before becoming one, and met the Lord in prison! But when they encountered the risen Christ, they became extraordinary heroes of faith! Read their amazing stories in More Than Survivors!

Sala, More Than a Survivor

Book Description

Touching and inspirational story of Sala Lewis, who at age ten had been left alone to wander the streets, after her family had been taken away by the Nazis. Sala had been out with her friends when she came home to find her family gone and the apartment she lived in sealed off. Everything she possessed was no longer hers. She had no family, no clothes, no food, and at that moment in time no future. But Sala was strong willed. Even at a young age one could see Sala would not get lost in this world. She wouldn’t give up and she wouldn’t allow herself to be afraid. Even when she was taken away by the Nazis, she fought to stay alive. Her uncompromising determination led her to find the camp that her sister Dora was in. Once they were together nothing could stop them. To this day their love and commitment to each other is beyond reproach. They believed in the American dream and the land of opportunity. The proudest day of their lives was when they became citizens. They were more than survivors, they were Americans.

Intimate Partner Violence and the LGBT+ Community

Book Description

Intimate Partner Violence is a serious social problem affecting millions in the United States and worldwide. The image of violence enacted by a male aggressor to a female victim dominates public perceptions of intimate partner violence (IPV). This volume examines how this heteronormativity influences reporting and responding to partner violence when those involved do not fit the stereotype of a typical victim of IPV. Research and theory have helped us to understand power dynamics about heterosexual IPV; this book encourages greater attention to the unique issues and power dynamics of IPV in sexual minority populations. Divided into five distinct sections, chapters address research and theories associated with IPV, examining the similarities and differences of IPV within heterosexual and gender minority relationships. Among the topics discussed: Research methodology and scope of the problem Primary prevention and intervention of IPV among sexual and gender minorities Barriers to help-seeking among various populations Promoting outreach and advocacy Criminal justice response to IPV With recommendations for intervention and prevention, criminal justice response and policy, Intimate Partner Violence and the LGBT+ Community: Understanding Power Dynamics will be of use to students, researchers, and practitioners of psychology, criminal justice, and public policy.
