Whooping Crane Population Dynamics on the Nesting Grounds, Wood Buffalo National Park, Northwest Territories, Canada


Book Description

Observations presented in this paper are a chronology of whooping crane (Grus americana) population changes and of events on the breeding grounds (1954-65) at Wood Buffalo Park, Northwest Territories. The nesting area in the Sass River region of the park is first described, followed by a review of crane behaviour at the nesting grounds. Data are given on population changes in the wild flock, nesting success in terms of eggs laid and hatched, and crane mortality and predation. The relation between weather conditions and nesting success is discussed along with the prognosis for crane survival.
