This volume consists of presentations at recent events of the IFLA Newspapers Section in Oslo 2005, Canberra 2005, Buenos Aires 2004, Shanghai 2004, Berlin 2003 and Cape Town 2003. It covers the variety and intensity of newspaper activities worldwide, emphasising both regional activities and current work in the fields of the preservation and digitisation of newspapers, and including reports on the ongoing US and UK projects. Another essential subject covered in this volume is the very complex issue of newspapers and copyright. This publication presents the current state of newspaper librarianship on all five continents. It reflects not only the remarkable progress made during recent years, but also the major challenges for the future.

This paper seeks to provide an intellectual rationale for maintaining the centrality of preservation concepts and ethics in an increasingly digital information environment; in other words, while some long-held principles of preservation management may no longer apply, many others are still viable in high-tech situations. Libraries are rearranging budgets and raising funds for digital image conversion. They must take steps to ensure long-term access to digital image files. The proposed context for preservation action, or conditions that need to exist as steps are taken, puts a premium on the library's sense of itself as custodian of materials with social value, an organizational structure that allocates resources to preservation, and cooperative effort among institutions. Preservation action should ultimately place priority on the longevity, choice or selectivity, quality, integrity, and accessibility of the images. The paper also offers suggestions for a framework of effective preservation leadership. (Contains 10 figures and 75 references.) (BEW)

Digitisation has been a hot topic in newspaper librarianship for some years now; it came as a godsend for many bulky and space-consuming collections. The major part of this volume comprises the papers given at the international conference on newspaper digitisation held at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City (May 2006) and presents the state of the art, including experiences from current British and North American projects. This material is complemented by presentations from the World Library and Information Congress in Seoul (August 2006), focusing on the East Asian Newspaper situation.
